Default gas gauge

Like most people know, out car has a 20 gallon tank. I remember reading somewhere in the manual i think that said we have a 2.5 gallon reserve. I know that when I let the DTE on trip computer start flashing dashes, and I fill up, i get can pump around 17.5 gallons into it. Im assuming that the DTE meter on the trip computer only computes the 17.5 gallons. the other 2.5 gallons I guess are for "just in case". I know that sounds confusing, I'll try and clear it up later if no ones understands.

**DISCLAIMER: I know this thread is a little old, but I found it an interesting read and I think other new Z owners might also.

Anyways, in my experience with my '08 and from everything I've read on the forums, everything you said is true. It seems our gas gauges only cover about 17-18 gallons of our total 20.2. My old car was an Audi A4 which had a 15 gallon tank but would only have a 1 gallon reserve after the DTE read 0 miles. From what I understand all newer cars have some kind of reserve fuel.

I also believe (although I haven't tested this yet) that it shouldn't be too hard to attain 30-35 (highway/cruising) mpg shifting and accelerating really conservatively. Most cars are really capable of a very wide range of fuel economies and it's not something you can just change instantly, reset your gauges, and see. In my experience it takes practice and you really have to get a feel for the car. I can only speak for my '08 with the newer motor but I have no problem going into sixth whenever possible, still plenty of torque. No "lugging" or anything unusual, same feel as any other gear but lower RPMs.

I've personally made the drive from San Jose to Los Angeles (down the 5) on a single tank. That's about 370 miles. I bet if I had gone 55 instead of 80, I'd have done a lot better.

The Z gets better gas mileage than my 4 cyl Honda CR-V.

It gets better average then my Audi A4 1.8t which is a 4 cylinder turbo but that's because the audi was lacking in power so much I'd really have to floor it to do the daily maneuvering around town. Not to mention it had 110,000 and was filled with mechanical issues.

I am getting approximately 21 mpg in combined city/hwy driving and I am not hot-******* the car. However I can't drive 55 in the Atlanta Interstate traffic.

I get about 22-24 intown and 27-29 on the highway averaging about 80mph. Ive never had the self control to go 50-60 in the highway, but Im sure Id see somewhere around 35mpg if I did.

Oh and I usually fill up only about 14 gallons when the light is on - If I stretch it to --- on the gauge it still only takes 15-16 gallons. That leaves me with usually 4-6 gallons when the car says Im out (when in reality I have enough fuel for at least another 100 miles)...

The Z has better areo than the boxy CR-V plus the Honda's has higher RPM's at 80mph or hwy cruising speed.

The Z get the same HWY mpg as my 1.8T Audi A4 Quattro.
