Default Am I Nuts???? (Help Raceboy)

Today I saw a yellow Toyota MRS with some external mods and it simply was stunning. It was absolutely one of the most beautiful machines I have ever seen in my life. So, the first chance I got, I got online and found that there is considerable aftermarket products upgrtades for the car that seemed reasonably priced. I looked it up and found I could get a loaded one for right at 25K, considerably less than what my deal for my touring 6MT 350Z would be. So I am thinking if I were to get the Spyder I would have @ 8K to spend on aftermarket goodies for it and still not quite reach the price that the Z would cost me. Thats a considerable amount. I KNOW that the Spyder will not even come close to the Z performancewise stock, but after some modding, I'm sure it could be at least somewhat close. Besides, looks are first priority fro me, with performance second. I love the look of the Z, but that MRS was breathtaking, and it comes in Yellow, which is the color sports car I really want. My dealer has been unable to get me a VIN or delivery date up to this point other than "sometime in September". I almost wish I had not seen that MRS, but now, I find myself second guessing. Raceboy, if you read this please tell me a little about the MRS. I have seen your pics of yours and I am looking for a little insight here. Any oppinions from others is also welcome, just dont flame or bash me. I am aware that the Z is in a different class than the MRS. Its just that maybe I can be just as happy in the spyder, have a lower monthy payment, and have a bunch of money to spend on aftermarket improvements. There are very few MRS's in my area so exclusivity is not an issue. Advice, anyone?? (Raceboy??) Thanks.

YES, you are. Glad I could be of help.

Oh wait, you mean you want MORE info. Some people are never satisfied. The Spyder is so different from the Z, its really hard to compare them. The Spyder will be very cramped with the top on and is EXTREMELY light weight. You could never use the Spyder as your daily driver. Now, if the Z or the Spyder is just going to be your weekend/fair weather car, you could consider the Spyder. But if your thinking of the Spyder as a daily driver, you are, in my very humble opinion, OUT OF YOUR FRICKEN MIND!!!!!

He's not crazy guys. I sold my Spyder this past week and I was very sorry to see it go. Kind of sad actually. It has been a simply awesome car and to anyone who hasn't driven an extremely lightweight sportcar you just simply can't know. I used it as my daily driver for 2.5 years and I also logged well over 2000 track miles on the car without so much as a wimper. The Spyder is also quite roomy inside, much more so than a Miata or S2K (I don't fit in either one of those cars.)

So why did I sell it? First of all, 2.5 years is actually extrememly long for me. You had better be happy with the stock HP unless you are willing to go turbo. My car was nearing the end of the warranty and the 1ZZFE engine has had a high ratio of failures in the MR2 application because of CAT placement. The car was also not nearly as stiff anymore being an open top.

You want the MR2, buy it.

Someone PLEASE define light weight sports cars......?
(Elise?)

BTW, wish the Z weighs 2700 LBS.

My MR2 Spyder scaled in at 2089lbs with a half tank of fuel. That is the lightest weight sports car currently sold in the U.S.

Ahhh, my perfect car: Toyota 2ZZGE (180hp) powered MR2 Coupe (I never really cared that much for the ragtop.) If Toyota built that I'd be driving one right now.

Agh! The MR2 Spyder is terrible to drive more than a few miles! It seems like fun for a few minutes, and then it starts hurting. The suspension is really punishing. I drove a spyder for a while, and I was glad to get out of it and get back into a more driveable sports car.

Are you the little old lady from Pasadena?? You would have really hated mine then with a full TRD Sportivo suspension package. Pretty funny because I never thought of it as bad at all. Tight, crisp, nearly telepathic, never harsh, but ultimately the car was so much better than the motor. Then again, I spend 2-3 hours a week behind the wheel of a racing kart, so anything in comparison seems like a cream puff.

I can only hope that the 350Z approaches the transient response of my last MR2 Spyder. At my very first SCCA autocross in the Spyder I won a Novice class event ahead of 19 other much more powerful, but heavier, cars in that class. If only Toyota offered the 2ZZ option, I'd still be in the Toyota tent.
