putting it in neutral drops your rpms to under 1k. How is this wasting gas?

Does rolling in Nuetral at speed have any negative affect on the car... For instance, when rolling down a long hill, sometimes I just drop it in nuetral and coast... Are their any negative consequences from this activity??

Coast...... no downshifting unless i'm on a spirited drive with friends... otherwise again i do not stay in gear when coming to a stop. Just doesn't feel like the right thing for the car. or at least in a Z.

do a 180 with the tires smoking and then slam it into reverse and go right through the light.

wrong... being in gear uses no gas at all... it depends on the slope of the hill but most of the item its best to stay in a high gear. Neutral uses gas to keep the engine going.

I do the neutral > coast > then brake. Unless I need to be in gear.

I still don't understand why people love to downshift and let the drivetrain take the load of slowing down.... stopping is what brakes are designed for.... they have no other purpose!!!

But personally when I'm coming up on a red light I crack my door and let my foot drag on the ground because that also helps the car stop tremendously quick and it saves me about 2 mpg!!!

Engine braking should only ideally be used on downhill slopes to keep you from over accelerating (so you don't have to ride the brakes for a long time). Engine braking when going to a stop is pointless, just more unnecessary wear on the drivetrain. I don't need to show off so when I know I'm rolling to a stop I throw it in neutral and use the brakes. If I think the light might turn green soon or I might need to get on the gas I push in the clutch and keep the gear lever in the appropriate gear. The only time I downshift is when passing or when slowing down before entering a corner.

From an 'on track' perspective engine braking is never used. It's an uncontrolled descent, it serves no purpose. In our car, on track, you'd be braking in a straight line before a turn and heel-toe downshifting (which our car happens to be awesome at).

Beware with engine braking. I have almost been hit numerous times because people dont realize you are slowing down because your brake lights do not come on. You also have to assume everyone around you is an air head, on their cell phones, not paying attention, have no concept of engine braking, and female.

becuase your engine is now idling, which requires gas

you wont use any fuel if you just take the foot off the gas and use the brake.

A pair of shoes is cheaper than brake pads...
