Funny thats what I do sometimes when I need to fill up and have a half tank of 93 octane, I just fill the rest of the tank up with 89 octane and I'm good to go.

91 is minimum grade for Z. It is the "best" you can get in Cali.

93 is fine; I doubt you would save many pennies even if you find some place that carries 91 in Florida.

For those that have the 87/89/93 options, how much is the price difference? In AZ, where they only have 87/89/91, it is usually a 10 cent increase for each level, meaning 91 is usually 20 cents higher than 87.

Just curious if 93 is (on average) more than 20 cents more than 87.

I don't know if this is common knowledge, 89 octane is really made by mixing a certain ratio (not exactly 50/50) of 87 and 91 octane at the gas terminal where the gas trucks picks up the gas. (no 93 oct. here in CA).

This is what I've been told when I went on a tour of a gasoline terminal when I first started working for Chevron Corp.

So I'm guessing mixing 89 and 93 can achieve something similar.

Here in MT premium is 91, there has only recently been 93 available at one exxon station where I live. Only place I know of with 93, but it is the same price as 91 everywhere else...

There is a whole lotta ignorance floating around here in regards to octane ratings. Some of you might want to look into why certain octane ratings are available in some regions and not in others.
