Thanks for the link. I was just wondering about what would happen if i were to use a different grade. If there are people who use midgrade gasoline on their z without problems then good for you.

 

what will happen if you use lower grade gas?

you will get reduced performance because the engine will retard timing. you risk detonation.

if there are people out there who use mid-grade on their z's, they are ignorant and should not own one in the first place.

You all are retarded, j/k. My co-worker friend's Nissan Titan V8 with 65,000 miles in 2 years was putting 87 octane gas, he has no problems. My boss' Toyota 4WD V8 4Runner with 35,000 miles in little less than 2 years is running 87 octane gas, he has no problems. My almost 4 year old Z with 14,000 miles running 93 octane gas, or the highest grade with no problems. I put higher grade because I want to keep my Z happy. It will not hurt your engine unless you do a lot of reving. The owner's manual is not the bible, they will say buy Nissan oil filter, buy Nissan spark plug and buy their service maintance 15K, 30K, 45K which is one of the worst ripoffs at the car dealership.

hell, i am loving it since gas prices dropped over .30 cents here in a few days (was 4.05 on monday, now it is 3.68). this is on base though

 

There has been an interesting discussion along these lines on a Harley motorcycle forum that i frequent. For those that don't know, Harleys also call for premium gas according to the manual. A lot of the guys believe they are safer buying the 87 octane these days because they think the premium is going stale from sitting in the tank too long. I'm sure premium sales are down from the high prices and i do know that gas will go bad over a period of time. Not sure if it loses octane rating or not. Definitely some unknowns here that could have some merit. I will continue to run 91/93 octane and hope for the best. As a side note, i have run 87 in my Harley a couple of times but only because that was my only option - either that or start pushing. To my surprise i noticed absolutely no difference in performance.

 

Interesting, maybe in the back towns this is possible, but in the cities there are plenty of cars that call for premium fuel only. I believe a lot of Mercedes, Lexus, type cars call for premium as well as my parents crossfire. So I find it hard to believe that premium gas would get stale.

in all honesty...you can adjust your octane rating in relevance to the time of year and the elevation you live in...i will go into more detail if asked...but seriously...if you cant afford to run 91-93 octane in your car...then you prolly shouldnt be looking to buy a Z at all

ive NEVER run anything less than 91 in my 240...hell for about 3-4 years all i ran in it was 100 (on my SR20)...and that was my daily driver

 

 

I got an idea. Do us all the favor and put 87. When you engine blows, then you will no longer post in this section nevermind forum.

Putting mid-grade gas or even regular in your Z wont do anything if it's every once and a while. The only way it will cause problems is if it becomes a continuous thing. Just remember not to do it too often and use some good fuel injector cleaner every now and then. I like Lucas brand fuel system cleaner.
