Should I buy a Z?
OK, I actually called a dealer just now...they have a USED performance 350z with 2600 km's - they are asking $47,000
As per Nissans website a new one is $45,850 (incl. dest and freight). I told the guy over the phone that they are asking more for a used one than new. He said he thought I was mistaken and that a new one was closer to $48,000. I told him I had the print out right in front of me and that he could check for himself and that I was correct.
As well I asked him whether new ones were going for MSRP or less. He said they were usually going for less than sticker now. So basically he is asking at least 2 grand more for a used one than new. At that point he asked me if I wanted to see it. I told him I wasn't going to waste my time when the asking price should be about 3 or 4,000 less than what it is. He took down my number and said he would call in a couple of weeks to discuss if further.
I had the same thing when I was buying my Celica, all the dealers basically were asking the same for a used one as they were for new. I ended up buying mine privately.
Anyways I took the first step....I now have 350Z wallpaper!!!

Hey, I went for the Z at 25 years of age. The only thing you have on me is a house, haha. The reason I am replying is because I have to sell the car to get in a house in this pathetic market. Of course I am in Sherwood Park so that doesn't help either. Anyway, car for sale... 350z Performance, Lemans Sunset.... 18000 km. Good luck
At 27 you are much further ahead than most; house half paid off, no debt other than house. Plus good earning potential.
Most guys would not even be questioning buying the Z in your position (but that's probably the reason your in good shape). Anyway, I'd hold back $5000 to $10,000 in cash as reserves & go buy the Z with your equity plus a small loan.
And if the price gap between new & usede is as small as you indicate, I'd buy new.

Don't buy brand new! I bought mine when it was a year old with 7000km's and I saved around 12k. It doesn't matter what dealers are 'asking' for a used one. They will always go waaay down in reality.

Here's the deal, I have a dilemna - all numbers below are in CDN funds.
I'm 27, I have a 2000 Celica GT that is fully paid off (bought used for $22,000). I want a 350Z bad - they go for about $48,000 out the door here. Used you can get one in the low 40's.
Anyways I am really torn between getting a Z and paying off my house...I am not married nor have a gf at this time and have about $25,000 in cash available, plus my Celi trade in (say 18,000).
Therefore 25 in cash + 18 for my Celica = basically a Z. However I really know financially this is a stupid move...I should be paying off my house, saving for retirement, etc. Basically I have about 90,000 left on my mortgage on a $185,000 house. So I've done well for myself at this age I think. My parents haven't given me a dime for anything either.
I have good earning potential so the way I see it, I'm only hurting myself a bit financially as it will only take an extra couple of years to pay my house off and this will still happen before I'm 35. Basically I want you guys to tell me to screw responsiblity and go for the Z. Also is some emergency or something happens I could always sell the Z and get close to what I paid for it.....at least I think so.
Another thing is that I live somewhere that snows 5 months of the year so it would have to sit for half the year and I'd need a beater of some kind for the remainder.
Anyone in my spot who went for it??? I really don't want to wait till I'm 50 to have a nice car.

One must always balance enjoying the present with planning for the future.
If you have half your house paid off at age 27, no other real debt, and most importantly, a decent and secure souce of income, by all means, go for it! The key factor for you, I believe, is your income/job security. Base your decsion on that. As for the weather, yes it would be nice to get a winter beater, but the Z's balanced weight distribution lends to good driving dymanics in small amounts of snow so long as you put a good set of high performance winter tires on the car.
