7500 mile service or dealer bs?
First of all, I have to mention that at this point I am very happy with the service dept. at my dealership.
They have informed me that I should do a 7500 mile service on my car. I have no problems with that, however, I sort of have a problem with what they intend to do. Besides oil change and standard inspection they would like to do the following:
1. Reset my ecu.
2. Rotate my tires.
As I understand it, the ecu is “self adjusting” i.e. resetting it won’t do anything since in a couple of days it will be back to where it was before. Is that correct?
My dealership knows about the tire feathering issue. Since the tires are unidirectional they will of course have to remount them and mess with tire sensors. I don’t think my tires are feathered at all. Also, the owner’s manual 7500-mile service page says “rotate tires except 350Z”
I realize that rotating the tires will somewhat lengthen their life. The service cost is $225 bucks (oil change, tire rotation, ecu reset). The stock tires are crap IMHO. I think the dealership wants me to do it as a preventative maintenance for tire feathering (even though this will not prevent the feathering issue if my car has one) or they want to make more money.
I am leaning towards not doing the service (I will change the oil but that’s about all) and putting the $225 towards a new set of tires.
If anyone can answer my ecu question and/or has any input on this tire rotation issue (is it worth it?)... speak up.
Thanks,
Dmitry

The tires are directional & the rears are wider than the front. The only way you could rotate them is side to side if you take the tires completely off the rims(left to right & right to left). If you can change your own oil,it would save you $200 bucks.3rd,disconnect the battery for a few minutes & it will reset the computer. My dealer never said the ECU needs reset???Sounds like a profit deal.I could be wrong.Hope you get more feed back from the folks on this site.Regards,Tom
Don't do it, it is typical BS. Have you ever looked at the service chart that shows what they do for $100+? I'm talking adjust fluid levels, clean battery terminals, inspect brakes (meaning just look at them), and change oil/filter. Sounds like something you could do yourself easily in about 10 minutes (except the oil-change)... save the money, get just the oil changed, and have $200 for new tires...
I don't want to sound ironic nor offensive but how hard is it to call another Nissan dealer and ask them what do they recomend doing at 7500 miles. Of course, make sure they know you asked the same question at another delearship, so that the one you are calling will be in a bad position to lie. By the way, tire feathering is a TSB so you don't have to pay a dime for it.
I am in same boat as far as 7500 miles service is concerned. Took the car to dealer for oil change at 7400 miles. He wanted to do 7500 miles service for $125. I looked at it, and all it is check fluid levels and so on. I said no for now but when I looked at my receipt I saw "Customer refused 7500 miles service". I don't want to get into warranty issues later, what would you guys suggest.

Didn't you get a service manual? What does it say is required? If it says do it, then do it. If I recall correctly, the car doesn't require much more than an oil change every 3750 miles until it reaches over 100k miles. I'm taking mine in for it's 1st service tomorrow. Like My other Z's I plan to "watch & learn" so that I can perform most services myself in the future. I do everything except timing belts on my other 2 & most of you know by now how many miles I have on the 87. Of course as you know, the biggest key is oil/filter as required or sooner. Bite the bullet at first. Ask questions & pay attention. You may want to even look ahead in the service manual to see what is required for future services & ask ?'s about anything you think you can do on your own and keep your own maintenance log. I'm sure I've saved thousand's of $'s over the years. Plus, I really enjoy doing it myself.
