Does the resale value of these cars make anyone else sick?
I am seriously dissapointed in the resale value of these cars. I have never owned a car that depreciated in value faster than this one. I payed $31,000 for a brand new Performance in Feb and now I can't sell my car for $25,000. A Nissan dealership said my car was only worth $22k. F*** Nissan. I will never buy another car from them. They flooded the market with over priced cars and now we are all stuck with vehicles that depreciate faster than we can make payments on them. I've owned lots of Toyotas, Hondas, and Mazdas and barely lost money on them. My twin turbo supra and twin turbo RX7 actually increased in value during the time I had them. That is a sign you have a genuine unique sports car. In the combined 9 years that the rx7 and supra were sold in this country there were less of those produced than in the first model year of the Z. Another fact that makes me sick. I can't go a single day without seeing at least 5 other Z's on the road. I don't know about you guys, but when I buy what I think is a unique sports car, I don't want to see a million of them on the road. I actually had one Z owner flip me off in my Z for having the same car. True story. Whatever the case is, I'm not buying into the hype surrounding a mass produced pseudo sports car again.

Sounds like you shouldda bought a used viper or something. I don't think people buy the Z to be unique. At least I didn't. I don't buy a car based on what image it will give me. I did because its a beast of a track car for the price, and with some cash can be an incredible performing car, luxurious (im leather-wrapping stuff, stereo, nav, etc), and dead sexy. True there are lots of Zs made, but thats because they can be produced cheap, and Nissan wants to make a profit. They aren't concerned that you have your panties in a bunch because you want something, as long as nobody else has it. C'mon, this isn't kindergarden. Share.

your mistake is trying to sell the car back to the dealer! of course they are going to low ball you, that's how dealers make the most profit is cheating you on your trade-in. they'll buy your car from you at $22k, then turn around and sell it for $28! Put an ad in the paper, sell it to a private party - that's the only way to get what its really worth. this is true for 99% of cars out there...

I have tried selling it privately. No one wants the car. They offer $24000. I tried a dealership just to see what would happen. Look at all the cars for sale on this forum. Onwers are asking $25000-$27000 and can't sell them.

Well I don't think this is a problem just for Z owners. This would happen no matter what car you have. You're stuck with a nearly new USED car that most people would rather spend a couple extra grand for a Brand New one.
Think about it: would you want a USED car for $28k when you can get a brand spanking new Z for the same price?

I totalled my car after owning it for 6 months and the insurance company gave me $500 less than what I paid for it.
Apparently my insurance company thinks the resale is pretty good.

People see you only have a few thousand miles on the car and get scared as to why you are selling it. I know I would be a little turned-off if someone tried to sell me one, because I would think something was wrong with it for their wanting to sell. Go buy a Hummer H2 and drive it off the lot, try selling IT for a few grand under what you paid. You will be very lucky if someone buys it. For a sports car, nobody wants a car that has been ragged during break-in period then tossed aside for a sale. Me, I'm planning on keeping the Z for a LONG time and dumping a TON of money into it, and after a while getting a 2nd car and having the Z be set up for the track...

how about this: you take a 2003 Z and 2003 Toyota Celica. 5 years from now, let's guess which one has held more value? my money would be on the Z.

To answer the question: No.
I guess I'm wondering what you expected. It was well known that Nissan was going to try and make the Z the best selling sports car in the world. I don't think you should be surprised that there are a bunch of us out there (although it's sad that some jerk-*** gave you the bird).
Also, you are comparing the Z (a car which is sold new by the thousands) to an RX-7 and Supra, which haven't been sold here new for over 6 years. It seems like you therefore shouldn't be surprised that those cars hold their value better. And if your RX-7 and Supra increased in value, then you can't have purchased them new like you did the Z, since those cars never sold for more than their as new price.
If you were truly surprised by this turn of events, then I feel bad for you, but frankly, I don't think the relatively low value of first year Z's is much of a surprise.
If I were in the market for one now, I would definitely be holding out for an '04 unless I could get a $5000-$8000 discount on a used '03.
Maybe you should just keep the Z and make some mods to get it closer to the way you'd like. Then you could wait a few years and sell it then, by which time you would have been able to get some use out of it.
Either way, good luck!

"pseudo sports car"? i don't know if this makes sense, but i'd rather have a new enthusiast than a used performance. maybe that's why you're having a hard time selling it for $28k. i bet base models depreciate A LOT more slowly.

I am imagining that I will keep the Z and give it to my son one day (so no real worries about resale value)... but I wonder if manuals will be a thing of the past since a lot of vehicles are adopting the BMW-type of SMG transmission....

tell me what you think of this deal...
I bought a Mercury Cougar 2002 35th Anniversary Edition Fully loaded / leather / manual / 17's / all the cosmetic crap...
I put 2000 down plus traded in a 97 honda civic (trashed was my sisters car) ((at this time i was living in boston and only had a car there for a few months))
I owed about 18000 on the car when i went to trade it in for my z... my payments were differed for 5 months on the cougar so i barely made any payments at all... I had the car 8 months and put 47000 miles on it...
Dealer tagged on the extra almot 10G"s under the value of my trade in... so Im financing a 43000 dollar Z...
hehehe

don't the car lose 10% of it's value the moment you drive it off the lot? That's like $3k.
Also, try finding a 1 year old 2 seater sports car that makes 287hp and 274 lb-ft and looks great for less than $30k. I can't think of any possibilities.
