You can get them from independent companies but Nissan also offers them see here for the different plans:

The pricing is from the dealers so it's negotiable.

In my opinion an extended warranty is not worth the money you spend on it. Figure the dealer has to make money on the warranty so they will price it accordingly. Also you may end up paying interest on it so it will cost even more than you think. Also they sometimes have a deductible and restrictions apply. all in all I say save your money.

An important factor to consider is HOW long you plan on keeping the car. If you're going to have the Z for a while, it may be worth it. But it depends on the price as well.

just remember, the price is negotiable. When I helped my sis-in=law buy her C230 coupe, the finance guy started off at 3500 and came all the way down to 1200 for an extended warranty.

Default Extended Warranty

My credit union(so does Consumer Reports) advises against extended warranties unless you are buying a car with a history of problems. Why, you say, would I buy such a car? Look up the reliability ratings of Corvettes sometime. If I were to buy a vette, I would definitely get an extended warranty if I could determine it actually covered some expensive part of my car; on a car as reliable as a Z or a Maxima, Accord, Camry, etc. its a waste of money.

By the way, the Z has a 3yr/36,000 mile Basic Warranty and a 5yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. If you're thinking about an extended warranty to cover any powertrain problems from racing, forget it. All of the warrantys exclude racing, unless you can convince Nissan or some other company, you weren't doing anything like that, at least I've never heard of one.

Also, extended warrantys are generally referred to as part of a"dealer pack", basically a lot of useless stuff you don't need or want, paint sealant, seat protection, etched windows with traceable #s. And, I have heard a number of people say good luck on collecting on a claim, its excluded. Its hard to tell what is included unless you are an attorney.

When your salesperson turns you over to the financial folks and extended warrantys are offered, I always say "I maintain my cars better than the manufacturer requires, so I have no need for any additional coverage, including the company's". Its also true, I always have and will continue to do so; if a warranty issue arises I have all my documentation in hand and a backup in the dealer's database. Its why I have the dealer do all or most of my work, and, I always have documentation. ALWAYS.

I debated this as well but I wound up buying the Nissan Gold extended warranty. I just payed over $400 to replace the alternator on my old car so I thought there could be some value in having extra protection especially with a new model like the 350Z. The basic warranty is 36 months/36,000 miles. I purchased the Nissan 72month/75,000 miles warranty but got the cheaper one that had a $50 deductable for $590. I figure if I have only one or two minor repairs like a seat heater or alternator it will pay for itself.

In general I stay away from extended warranties.

In general if you want an extended warranty do not get it from the dealer. Shop around to compare plans and prices for the best deal. This a a cash cow for the dealer. Also remember you will have to maintain your vehicle with the manufactures warranty guidelines with $500-1000 30,000 and 60,000 mile service. If you maintain your car with oil changes, replacing coolant every 12 months, manual and rear end oil changes every 30000 miles you are not likely to have problems with your car. I have been doing this with my last 5 cars, 280Z, 1984 RX-7, 1990 300ZX, 1993 Mazda RX-7 and 1998 Mitsubshi 3000GT and have not had any problems. I still have the 1993 Mazda RX-7 with 92,000 miles and the 3000GT with 76,000 miles. Still run like new.

Victor -

Extended warranties are like Mobil 1 oil, the average owner doesn't need them but they make them feel better and offer peace of mind.

Since your father likes them I wouldn't argue about it.

I would, however, check with your dealer about how much time you have after purchase before you need to purchase it without a penalty.

With my Honda S2000 you have two years before the price goes up a little. My dealer wanted $1495 for a 7/75 Hondacare 0 deductable policy. The guys on the S2000 board started posting prices all over the country and found one for $850. They are good at any Honda dealer so it doesn't matter where you get them.

I would guess Nissan is similar and that the guys on this board will come ip with a price cheaper than you can get it at your individual dealer.

Quick funny story about extended warrentees:

A friend of mine was buying a car and I was with him when "closing" the deal. The dealer offered an extended warrentee and since he and I both thought as many of you do that it is just added profit to the dealer, my buddy says..."I'll tell you what. You knock another point of that interest rate on the car loan and I'll buy your $1200 extended warrentee."

I was shocked!

After we left I turned to him and said "What are you stupid? why did you do that?" His reply was great. "You see, at the amount I'm financing, each point off is approxamately $600 dollars I save. besides while reading the finepint on this extended warrenttee (which was then handing to me as we drove off in his nice new car) clearly states that I have 7 days in which I can cancel the contract and be refunded the money!... No find me that address in there where to send my cancellation letter.

He did just that and he did get the $1200 back and he did get to keep the lower interest rate.

Moral: A clever last minute car buying tactic.
