I didn't change my driving habits when I got my V1. It's not a license to speed (more than I previously did). It's just nice to know where the cops are hiding.

I drive mostly on the hwy and you can tell that there's a speed trap with a radar detector going off in areas that usually doesn't come on. Again, I use it as a 3rd eye when driving. It doesn't mean I can drive fast and wrecklessly. And like most have posted, check the cars in front of you to see brake lights. This is also a habit of mine, I like to check all my mirrors once every other minute incase of one snuck behind you. Looking at my mirrors saved my behind (no pun intended).

That's my X50. That's in the wife's car now, and my V1 is even better.
Thank you, that is exaclty what I was looking to see. I don't really know to much about the differnt types of radars and lasers the police use, but my main consern in my area is driving on a highway where a cop is sitting in his car.

Do the cops actually target you with the guns from the car or do the cars themselves have radar dectectors in them(like permenant mounted ones). I find most people around get pulled over when all of a sudden a cop comes up behind them on the highway. Especally when its dark. Those Staties absolutly fly in the left lane, and by the time you look up the blue lights are already on.

Can the V1/Passport, etc. detect if a cop car itself (regardless of the gun they use) is comming up behind you?

Also are radar detectors illegal in MASS? I probably wont hardwire it, but instead just stick it to the bottom of the windshield I guess. (does it matter if they are on the bottom or top?)

My concern is, that if I am just driving around town and a cop can see it, will he pull me over for that?

I've only gotten 1 ticket in my life going 91 on an open highway 9 O'clock on Sunday morning on the 30th of the month. When your on the open road with the areo kit working on the Nismo you really cant tell your going that fast. It just pissed me off for all the dumb stuff I have done in the past, going at a good clip on the highway when no one is around is when i get nabbed.

That one cost me 360 bucks..... I figure at that cost a radar detector is more of an investment than anything

the only reason I haven't invested in one is I think a cop is more likely to write you up when he sees your radar detector. I've been pulled over twice in my 8 years of driving and let go both times.. :/

Radars do save you for cost and I also know that pulling your foot off the accelerator does an even better job. This is coming from someone who was on probation for going to fast...

Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia and they can detect your detector and seize it I believe. A couple of other states, and Canada too.
Cop in Ohio let me off with a warning after pointing to my V1 and saying "won't always help you". Like duh!! 73 in a 55. "Thank you Sir!"

Mine has saved me MANY times.

I have the Escort SRX that jams laser. It will warn you verbally about what it detects, X Band, K Band, or Laser.

Best investment (for the -Z-) that I have made since I bot it in 3/2004.

Most, but not all, radar is mounted inside the cars nowdays. Sometimes police just "pace" suspect cars and then pull them over. With pacing, there is no radar to detect, so you have to pay attention to cars behind you. Anytime I see another car driving behind me, like they don't fear getting a ticket, I slow down until I know why.

If they are using radar, yes. Every high end detector can detect radar shooting you in the back. However the V1 is the only radar detector on the market that has an extra antenna that "watches your back", and points that direction when the radar is coming from behind you. All others need the signal to bounce off of something in front of you and back into the anntenna that faces forward. (Other cars, street signs, trees, etc.)

I don't think they are illegal in your state, but cops might not give you a break if they see you have one.

If you are all alone on the road and the cop has his radar off. Your radar detector will not alert....

Then, if the cops waits until you are close enough to get a speed reading and then turns on his radar gun, your radar detector will go nuts, and you will still get a ticket.

You need what we call a "rabbit". At least one car ahead of you that will get hit with radar before you do. Then if / when the cop shoots the car a good distance in front of you, the radar detector will alert, and you can slow down, before the cop even sees you.

No radar detector will protect you from all speed traps. Some cops will let a couple speeders go by without turning on the radar gun, then nail another car just because they like the color, or just finished their paperwork or whatever...

Be careful.

Here in VT often times people will warn you if a cop is set up somewhere, no matter if you're on the interstate or just normal roads. I'll often be driving along and people will flash their lights at you, then just down the road you'll spot a cop sitting there. My car really sticks out around here, so I'll constantly get people warning me haha.

Havent really noticed this anywhere else.

Radar travels 299,792,458 miles / second. You just have react fast. Very fast.

I have heard many great things about the V1 as stated in this thread. I have also heard many great things about the Escort 9500ix. Can anyone chime in on which one would be most preferable and why based on their experiences?

I own both.

The V1 is the most sensitive windshield-mount detector on the market at the moment. On the hwy it's great. Of all the radar detectors I have ever owned, nothing has ever beat my V1 for over-the-hill-around-the-curve-forward-facing-sneaky-cop-radar detection. It is also the only radar detector that has a chance at picking up laser when someone else is shot. My V1 has done it twice. The sensitivity and the arrows help you determine where the signal is coming from, and let you know when youe are "done" with an alert. In the city, the V1's sensitivity can be a problem when it is alerting to every door sensor within a mile. (It is programable, and it has some filters that work well, but not as well as the 9500i or ix...

The 9500i, ix, and ci have the best filtering in radar detector history. They all use GPS to ignore known false alarms in your area and, once they know all the falses, only make noise when police are shooting radar. *I have had two times when police radar was not alerted to because the ix couldn't tell the difference between the police K-band radar and a K-band door opener that it was ignoring. -This is rare.* I use the ix in my work vehicle and it is great for this type of driving. The ix is also very good at detecting radar, but not quite as good as the V1. Also the V1 will not alert to speed cameras or red-light cameras, that use sensors in the ground. If it is not transmiting radar, the V1 will not alert. The ix on the other hand, has a database that can be updated over the internet, and alerts to all fixed-position cameras in the US.

Cliffs notes;

Hwy driving = V1
City driving = 9500ix

get the v1, but dont rely on the detector alone. read this, http://www.importatlanta.com/forums/...ht=speed+traps, also...ever seen truckers pulled over for speeding? get a cb radio if u really wanna know where cops are hiding on an interstate
