Does a Radar Detector Really Save You From Tickets?
I am thinking about getting a V1 in the near future. I dont want to turn this into a "Which is the best radar" thread
I just want to know if the good ones are actually worth the money. Do they actually notify you way in advance so you have plenty of time to slow down and make it seem like you were going 65 all along, or does it make you get a ticket for 85 when you would have gotten your license taken away for going 110?
I see people swear by them, but that the end of their post. Does anyone have any situations they have actually been in where you were going at excessive speeds and the detector saved your butt?
I am not saying I condon flying down the highway, but to be honest I usually dont even look at my speedo, I just look at the tach and feel as long as I am in control and not drivng recklessly I am ok.
Mods I wasn't sure where to post this so feel free to move it

That's why you also buy a good jammer.

But a detector/jammer setup will not save you 100% of the time. But I know that for me, I have saved a lot more money from tickets than I've spent on my detectors.
Yes. This is me at ZdayZ, 2006.

That's my X50. That's in the wife's car now, and my V1 is even better.

Great vid. And yep, my V1 saved me in '06 at ZDayZ a few times - isn't that the year they rolled out heavy enforcement on the weekend? They were out pretty heavy last year too but I always had plenty of warning. Best thing about the V1 is the arrows - once it tells you that you have passed the signal, you know right away whether it was a false alarm, so even though it is still chirping, you can get on with your life.

V1 has saved me alot of tickets, but I only use it on the highway.
worth the money.
Also there is a DIY for roof mounting it by using one of the plug holes where the roof clips go in, over your shoulder between passengers. That is where mine is and I have the remote display up above my rear view.

Indirectly yes. If a gun is used in the area you might get a signal. Keep in mind that signals bounce, and you will have little idea where the gun is. On the other hand you know that a gun is being used nearby so slow down. I have been on the road, get a flash, the see a cop a minute or two later.
If the cop has the gun pointed at you with instant ON, a detector will help little. If you get a flash its too late.
One side benefit of a detector is driving long trips. The detector keeps me awake for hours playing cat and mouse.

I was in my friends lotus on the highway and he has a V1. He was going insanely fast and as he came over the overpass a cop was sitting on the side but the V1 didn't detect him b/c he didn't have his gun on. But the instant my friend's lotus passed the cop, he turned his gun on and caught him going 98 mph..
Basically the cop turned his gun on right as we passed him so the radar didn't detect anything until he was caught. He was actually going 112mph but the officer said he caught him going 98mph.
Just like davidv said if you get a flash its too late..

I have received advance warning many times that gave me time to get down to the posted speed limit, however, just last night it didn't work. I had just turned into the housing area where I live and the speed limit is 20MPH which no one observes. It was dark when I turned onto the street leading to my house and there was a car approaching from the opposite direction. Suddenly my detector went off but it was too late..... instant on radar got me. I was only doing 30 and the deputy just warned me to drive a bit slower. A radar detector will not save you every time.
My $50 radar detector has saved my **** many times. I can't say it's as good as a V1 since I've never owned one but I've learned to trust it since it has proven itself time and again.
As a precaution along with my radar, I always try to cluster myself behind cars when I'm not sure what's up ahead. Also, I always look at brake lights ahead of me when they're going over a hill or a curve (usually at known speed traps). More than likely, there's a cop on the other side of the hill or curve. This has worked well for me.

The best post I've read yet. Having the detector/jammer is only part of the equation. Having good instincts or "street smarts" is the other part. A little luck never hurt either.
Sure, I still get a ticket every few months. But I speed daily.
A radar detector is just one tool you have at your disposal. They are good in certain circumstances, but you can't use them without taking certain precautions.
For instance, if you are traveling on the highway across the country it is advisable to slow down when coming up over hills, coming around corners, or when approaching areas (wooded areas) where ambushes are more easily performed. You will need to use your surroundings. Watch the cars in front of you for brake lights. Look for cars on the side of the road. Let other speeding cars lead the way (with safe distance). Use long straights to look far ahead. And in general be more cautious when approaching other vehicles (you can run up on the law and not recognize your situation until it is too late, plus it's just more safe for the other person and you anyway).

Saved my *** a few times, but if you are going 110 I'd say speeding up is a better option
most cops won't chase you if you are doing over 100.You just have to lay low after you pass because they probably called you in.

I got the New passport, raelly forgot then model number, but its the newest one hehe, paid arond $450 for it, and IT is AMAZING device! so far no fake signals, if that thing goes off YOU SEE a cop minute or two later... WORKS very well with LASERS too, but once again, if the laser is pointed straight at you while ur in the officers sight, U got a ticket...
Just drive smart and NEVER rely on ur radar device no matter how much it costs...
