Does anyone know if the AT on the Z is the same as the AT on the G35 is the same as the AT in the Q45?

i dont know for sure, but because nissan recycles the platform (FM) i wwould figure the AT's are the same. ALTHOUGH they might be geared diffrent so if you consider that a diffremce tehn they are diffrent, but physical wise (like dimensions) i would have to say its the same.

anyone else have a diffrent opinion or proof?

The reason that I asked, the Q45 is supposed to have the best AT on the market. If the 6mt is giving everyone such problems (maybe not on this forum but on many of the others) maybe the AT should be considered for new buyers of Zs. (other than the hard core macho type)

its take too much to post to explain the benifits of manual, but there are benifits besides a stick to hold onto, even vs the best automatic tranny.

not to say autos arent cool, great for everyday driving, but I think drag racing is the only place that a true automatic is still used. tho these new clutchless manuals are better, the best of every world.

Default Gear Ratios

The Z & the G35 Coupe have the same gear ratios and final drive ratios both in the Automatic & Manual transmissions. And from the looks, the Q45 does too...with the exception of the final drive which is the gear in the rear axel.

Manual:
3.794/ 2.324/ 1.624/ 1.271/ 1.000/ 0.794

Final Drive:
3.538

Automatic:
3.540/ 2.264/ 1.472/ 1.000/ 0.834

Final Drive:
3.357

The Q45 has the following ratios:
3.540/ 2.264/ 1.471/ 1.000/ 0.834

Final Drive:
2.764

I have friends with Manual Porsche 944 and another with a M3...
They talked mess at first... then they got a ride... showed them what manu-matic can do and its just like using a racing shifter.
They thought it was sweet... now no one knocks the manu-matic

PROS
You cant grind the gears
You cant jump gears
I've shifted at 8000 RPMS (even though REV LIMITER is 6900)
I shift at 7000+ regularly
*If you down shift you can still decelerate just like a manual and save on your brakes...
**On long drives you still have automatic!
***If I am drunk and want to use the "Hey baby wanna drive me home line" (she doesn't need to know how to drive stick...)

Go out and test drive one, im sure a dealer will have a manu-matic in stock...

I did test drive both and found the clutch on the 6mt a bear, and the AT manual a little quirky. It did not show first gear when I was at a stop, even though it was in first. I had this same problem with an Acura manu-matic that I test drove. I wasn't thoroughly impressed by either, that is why I am having a hard time deciding which one. All I know is there area lot of complaints about the 6mt, and I haven't seen one about the AT. I will be 60 when I buy the car, and I can't believe that I will still want to be shifting in a few years. However, a friend of mine (66) just bought a Porsche turbo with the manual and laughed at me when I said I would have gotten the tiptronic.

Default Auto is okay

I have the auto and I have nearly 39,000 miles on it in the 10+ months I have owned her. Never a problem and I have run a 13.9 quarter with it and it never missed a shift
Nope, I will never go back to "rowing" my way thru traffic, ever again.
Oh, did I mention, I quite possibly have the most miles accrued and I think I am the oldest (in 8 days!) @ 64 to be posting on the board as a Z owner and I love the auto! You go for it guy! Regards, Jim

Funny Porsche Guys... dislike anything thats not them and then when someone does clone them they talk smack...And Jim is 64... "Go get em Jim" Doesnt look a day past 40 standing text to his Z... HBD in 8 days....

I'm 23 and had the option to choose between the two options... guess what I would go manu-matic again...

Sometimes you want to shift sometimes you dont...

My screen shows first gear.... atleast i think so... Anybody concur?

It took me a week or two after break in to really learn the benifits of Manu-matic.... See if the dealer will let you drive the two for a day or two or to run errands....

Hard to choose, atleast your getting a Z.... or is it a G35?

my screen shows 1st!~...when I'm on lets say 4th and then stop at a light..it automatically brings me to 1st \..don't have to downshift to first, it'll do it for you.=) AND I LOVE MY AUTO!~...very quick for an auto.
My last car was manual and I test drove the manual z and ended up buying the auto for more then just one reason. I miss manual but I am very happy with my auto([preferably would like to have both). One of the reasons I also feel that the manu also feels quicker is because you lose the "middle clutch transaction feel" to other gears on an auto.

Jim H,
I saw your car as August Z of the month, and you listed that it had a 6mt. Don't tell me you really have the manual and not the AT.

It should be a 5% difference in performance as the gearing for the manual's final drive is wider than for the Auto. The only drawback, if an Auto Z has the rear differential of a Manual Z, his revs will also be 5% higher too.

So as an example, crusing at 3000 rpm would actually be 3150 rpm...

Default 6MT differential

Don't misunderstand the terminology here. The rearend I put in is simply from the manual shift 350. It is simply geared lower than the rearend in the 5AT. The rearend only had 1350 miles on it and I gave $400 for it. I think a new differential is about $1500. Regards, Jim
