Same platform doesn't mean same measurements. It just means the layout is basically the same. Within Nissan "proper", the Maxima, Altima, Murano, and Quest share one platform. The Z is unique, as are the Sentra and the Pathfinder. The Frontier and the XTerra share a platform. And the upcoming Armada and Titan share a platform (and engine!).

It's always bothered me that the Altima has gotten so much attention from the press and people compared to the Maxima. A 2K2 V6 Altima SE was very close in price to the 2K2 Maxima GXE but the Max has a WAY better interior.

the only reason a mid-price car like the Altima can get such a FINE engine as the VQ35 is becuse they make so many of them the price is reasonable.
In fact, all the nissans are getting engine good enough for the infiniti premium brand.
It may save them money, but it is also getting US more quality and performance for our dollar.
A rare case of win-win economizing.

I could be wrong about this, but wasn't it Renault's plan to share parts to cut cost? I mean the VQ engine has been used in sedans for almost ten years, but only lately has it spilled over to the Z, SUV, and other vehicles.
The word in Japan is that there were Engineers in Nissan who already had this plan but the conservative exec has been holding them back. Now it's Renault that's in the play, they are making more aggressive, untraditional marketing plan(for Nissan, atleast).

The Z is not 'unique'.. its built on the FM platform.. which was first used in the G35 Sedan, then the Z, then the G35c, and now the FX vehicles.
Think of a platform as a generic model for the car. They replace bits and modify aspects of the platform to suit the specific needs.. but the entire point is to not have to engineer a car from the ground up every time. Its like the 'generic car' they design, they re-engineer certains aspects of it as required. Its a time and cost saving methodology.
Even for the Z, the FM wheelbase was shortened by 8".
