Question for those with kids
I just found out that I am pregnant. How does the Z fit into that? I thought things would be ok with a car seat etc but people look at me like I am crazy...all that stuff wont fit in that little car.
Is it possible? I dont want to give up my Z I just got her. HELP!

i tried to get that air bag switch installed. it was a bit of a headache. i wanted to be able to take my nephews and nieces around. i got the letter of approval from the dept of transportation. when i tried to give it to the dealers on the island, none of them would do it. there is only one private company that does it, and the guy said that they have never done a z before... but they would "give it a shot" for $500. not very reassuring. i decided not to get it.
i hope you have much better luck than i did. oh, by the way, congratulations on your pregnancy.
oh, here is the link for the application for the air bag on/off switch: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/airbags/

The owners manual in the first few pages states that car seats shouldn't be put in the Z unless the airbag has been shut off. You'll have to go get approval for one via the highway safety transportation people, then have it installed at an approved location. Figure spending 4-500 dollars to have it done.
By the way, congrats on your news.

The whole airbag kill switch is an interesting issue. There's some good info in the document the NHTSA requires you read before applying for an installation permit. After reading that, and much other information I have found online, I decided not to get the kill switch for the rare instances when my girlfriend's five year old is in my car. She rides properly restrained in an approved car seat with the seat set back as far as it can go. This is perfectly legal and the safest method IMO.
If you read the stats, all child injuries caused by airbags happen when the child is 12" or less from the airbag when deployed. In a study of all these occurences, it was confirmed that the vast majority (something like 95%) of injuries happened with an unrestrained child. In the few instances where it wasn't confirmed, it was highly suspected. If I recall the stats correctly, there has never been an instance of a child properly restrained in a front facing car seat being injured by an airbag.
Of course, a rear facing child seat for an infant is a different case altogether. You must have a kill switch installed, and you should seriously think about any risks you are taking transporting an infant in the 350Z. So far the car has performed extremely well in all the gov't safety tests I have seen, but you should really consider if it is the safest mode of transportation for an infant.
Read all you can about it, and you should get a good feel for what is in the best interest of your childs safety.
Melissa, part of your question related to "all the stuff" being able to fit.
Take it from me, you will struggle to fit all you need to take with you, especially if you have an overnight (or longer) stay. By the time you put in a pram (as long as its not too big), travel cot, a bag for you and a couple fo bags for the little one you wont be able to close the hatch.
As far as the airbag goes. I have a three year old son who goes in my Z once or twice a week. He sits in approved booster seat with the seatbelt on (as is the law) and I have the seat as far back as it goes. I also know I adjust my driving style when he is in the car with me. BTW he loves being in the front seat with just his daddy.
Also, the airbags in Oz spec cars "go off" slower than the US ones because we have to wear seat belts.
Congrats on the pregnancy! I would have my boy over my Z any day so dont be afraid to get rid of the car if you have to.
As always

Melissa: Congratulations on becoming a parent. I think that you're are getting good practical advice. Of course none of us bought a Z to be practical.
I would have had trouble with the Z being my only car. There are more 'indispensible' things for kids that one never anticipates and you have to carry these things everywhere. It is difficult to fit it all in a normal car let alone a Z. Feeding is hard in a Z and after a very short period of time food and drink will be everywhere. Changing diapers is hard in a Z. No one else will be able to ride with you. etc.
Of course you could keep the Z and buy a used station wagon as your daily driver.

Melissa,
Congrats on your good news. I know exactly what you're going thru. 1 month after I got my Z, my wife told me she was pregnant. WTF?!!!! Anyway, we were fortunate enough to afford a Honda CRV and still keep the Z. Believe me, when I tell you that the Z is not fit to take an infant anywhere. You have to have the diaper bag, along with the stroller when you go anywhere with the baby. The stroller alone will not fit in the trunk.
If you can afford a second cheaper car, go get it. If not, perhaps you could trade it in for a G35C or Sedan. Regardless of your decision, I would gladly give up my Z just to be with my newborn anyday!!!!

my interpretation of this thread... girl saw guy in z, girl was overwhelmed by the effect of seeing a guy in a z, girl had to have sex with guy with z and marry guy with z, girl's obssession with z wasn't satisfied and she demanded guy sell her z, girl found out she was pregnant.
in my scenario, there is all this irony, her obssession with the z created the problem which could keep her from having the z. it's almost like a cautionary tale.
