Default My conversation with a Mitsu dealer, two insults later!

So on my afternoon off I decide to stroll over to the Mitsubishi dealership to check out a new Evo up close, with no intention of buying one or trading in my Z car. I just wanted to sit in one and see what the hype was all about. I know, it's not the same as driving one.

Anywho, I park my Z car around the corner and cruise onto the lot, walking right into the showroom. There were two Evos, one blue, one red, so I naturally migrate to the red one. As I'm looking into the front window, a young wild eyed salesman approaches me and asks if I can be helped:

SM: Pretty sick car, isn't it?

ME: Yes, it sure looks fast and furious.

SM: Yeah man, this thing can smoke Corvettes!

ME: Really?

SM: Yup? Do you know what the STI is?

ME: Yes, it's a souped up fake rally car.

SM: Well, the Evo can smoke it too. What do you mean by fake?

ME: Well, it has a 2.5L engine, but WRC cars can only have two liters.

SM: Oh, well, I this car has 1.8L (It really has 2.0L).

ME: Do you mind if I sit in it?

SM: Sure, why not?

ME: Well, when the new 350Zs hit the show room, some dealers were real picky about letting people mess with them on the showroom.

SM: Man, the Z car is a turd. (insult #1). Compared to this car it's really slow.

ME: Well, I have raced two Evos already in my new Z car and I have held my own pretty well.

SM: (blank look on face)

(After a long pause).

SM: Do you have the turbo or non-turbo?

ME: 350Z?

SM: Yes.

Me: They don't come from the factory with a turbo option.(I was 95% sure of this, so I figured since this guy already insulted me once I would toss it around with him a little more. However, I'm not sure about Z cars in Japan).

SM: Sure they do.

ME: No they don't.

SM: Yes they do.

ME: No they don't.

SM: Yes they do.

Me: You really think that? (buy this time his buddy has walked up as backup)

SM: Well, my best friends dad is the manager down at the Nissan place, so I should know better than you. (insult #2)

ME:

ME: So does your friend know you go around talking smack about his dads cars?

SM: (blank look on face).

(Sales dude walks away, leaving me alone with the red Evo).

Now I admit, the Evo is one hell of a car, but I hope all people who have these cars don't ack like this dumb@$$ salesman!

Happy Motoring!

I don't even know where to start with some of the stupid things dealers have said to me... "This is a clutchless automatic" (about the automatic 350Z. Uh, yeah, wouldn't all auto's be clutchless? "But its a manual with no clutch." Um, no, that would be a clutchless manual (ala SMG)...

I've met a few knowledgable dealers, but there are some I'm not even sure could start a car, let alone sell one...

Well the Nissan Dealer in So Cal, (Van Nuys-Miller Nissan) said that the Z was so fast, that it's impossible to make it any faster or else it would be too dangerous.

That was about 4 mos. ago when I was shopping around.

Yup...super funny

Kinda reminds me when I took a test drive of the RX-8..."oh yea, this thing will smoke the Z"

Not too many EVO 8's here in Hawaii, they want 6-8K above MSRP is what I hear.

Yeah, I'd say most dealers are lame because all dealers have salesmen. Unfortunately it seems as though we live in an age where integrity and honesty mean little.

When I was shopping around for my car, I had Nissan salesmen that went from clueless to wrong in about 5.5 seconds.

The only salesman I really liked was this 19 year old that wasn't shoveling ******** at me. It was a Honda dealer and I was test driving the S2k. Basically this kid tells me to drive the car like I hate it. Then he tells me how fast I should be able to take this turn or that turn or how fast I should be going by the third light. It was a blast and a pleasure. He let the car speak for itself and it spoke well. During the drive he went over the basics, was factually correct about everything. Then he asked if I had any questions, gave me his card and told me if I had any questions or wanted to go out on another drive to ring him up.

If it had been for the salesmanship alone, I'd have bought the car from him on the spot.

Most of the Nissan salesmen were buttheads. If they were over the age of 40 they didn't now jack about the car. If they were under, they'd just talk and talk and talk and when they ran out of facts, they'd just start making them up.

Ohh, and I love the bait and switch routine they pull. Telling you that the car they said they told you was in stock was "sold yesterday" but that they would find a similar car. Or the good cop bad cop routine. One is your friend while the other wears you down.

I think most of the Nissan salesmen are lucky that the Z sells itself.

I live in So Cal. I went to just about every dealer in LA and Orange County and called just about everyone in So Cal.

Just some thoughts...

I have thought about calling and talking to the sales manager, but I don't need to waste anymore time on that schlepstein. The best part he was 100% sure that the 350Z was sold with a factory turbo.

As a general rule, car salesmen don't know s**t about cars. It seems to be the only sector of the sales industry where knowing your product's capabilities and attributes is second to getting it out the door as quickly as possible. I was a car salesman for a little more than a year and it was a bonus working at a job where I was surrounded by new cars all day long. I'd drive/ride in a different car every day, visit the detailing bays, chill in the service department read about cars, talk about cars with customers, etc. Funny thing was it seemed as though I was the only one aware that we were selling cars. 95% of the sales guys couldn't tell you what type of engine any given car on the lot had, hp or tq numbers or anything actually useful about the car. What they could do is make people feel comfotable, tell them how good they looked and find out how much money they were going to be able to get out of them. That's it. Point being, don't be surpised (you should actually expect it) if the guy your buying a car from doesn't know anything about cars. That's not why they're there. They sure as hell know how to "structure" a deal, as it's called, to make sure they come out on top. Again, why else would they get up in the morning, or so the car salesman mentality goes. Sorry for the seemingly harsh, bitter post, but this is the truth.

No Problem. I like a good discussion. My point is that I would at least think they could get people in there with some amount of people skills. The problem with that is the dealer doesn't have to pay the salespersons anything unless they sell a car. I walked into the dealership in my dorky techno-wizz work clothes, so he figured I didn't know about anything except computers and playstation.

I to have come across car salesman that didn't know much about the cars they were selling, but never in my life have a met a more cocky, unpleasant, and foolish person.

All wheel drive, fast as sin, and sold by complete idiots. Like I once said on another thread....this is a classic case of Lancer Devolution.

What a coincidence! I pulled up along side one this morning on a two lane highway. We were both going about 65. I rode along side him for about 10 seconds and kept looking over. Finally the guy looks over and I kind of give him the "do you want to run" look. He just smiles and shakes his head no. I figured Oh well, and passed him and continued on. Maybe he just didn't like to race or maybe he heard my Procharger screaming under my hood It would have been fun.

Man what an idiot! An EVO to a Z--hmmmmm Common sense on this one was obivious. I hate wanna be know it alls. But I agree. Most salesman don't know jack---and I have purchased alot of new cars. The cool ones will work w/ you, not talk down--which woould kill a sale anyway like the idiot above.

Well I own a Nissan & a Mitsubishi, and between the 2 salesman I would pick the Mitsubishi salesman. Granted most salesman aren't gonna be genuine to begin with, but I would be more willing to send friends to that Misubishi salesman than to the cocky *** that sold me my 350z.

Then again I wasn't looking at an EVO either I was looking at AWD SUVs.
