Default Insight please!

Hey everyone, I'm looking to purschase this Z down in the states and I was told it pretty much only need a new Radiator, a bumper / hood, Front alluminum guard and passenger air bag ( dont care for ) all in all could you guys roughly give me an estimate to how much you think the repairs would cost me and all in all any tips on what questions i should really be concerned with and ask. He said he was going 15 mph and hit a pole.

Thanks

-Christopher

How much is he selling it for? It also looks like it needs a lot more work than just what you listed.

I think he said he hit a pole, not a pothole.

Estimate the repairs then multiply by 3.

Hi Christopher,

I don’t think this is a car you want to buy. For one thing it is unusual (although it can happen this way) for the passenger airbag to deploy in a front-end collision (and that appears to be the case here) when the driver’s air bag remains intact.

The front looks fairly damaged. There is certainly some bent stuff here.

No one reading this can offer more than a guess, so my guess is it will take $12K (Canadian $ ) or possibly a lot more to fix everything.

EDIT: I suppose if you hit a pole, you might experience a single airbag deployment. I'm not sure about that.

Based on the pictures and the information you provided I would guess somewhere in the ballpark of 10k-13k to get everything repaired, add that to the $7,000 he's asking and you will quickly realize that this is not a good deal for you.

Thanks for all the responses, i'm wondering why it would cost so much? I think i could pick up a radiator, bumper, aluminum guard for about 600 + installation.. though im sure there is the Housing for the rad etc..I know i don't really know much about this, so all opinions are taken into consideration!

^^ Ok… by the numbers…

You will obviously need to replace the deployed passenger airbag. That is something like $895.00.

When replacing a front passenger bag, you need to consider replacing the driver airbag. So, add the same cost, and add the sensors when replacing the front bumper. That takes you to well over $2K for just the airbags and the sensors.

The front end is obviously collapsed, so you need the replacement parts (new hood, front panels, maybe fender panels, etc.). You can figure this to be at least $3K to $5K.

The body work mounting new panels and fixing panels you can use will be $2K.

The damaged engine components and shrouding will cost another $2K.

Pad the estimate with a 10% safety margin, and you are at about $12K to $14K. And, I did not figure in damaged suspension components.

+1,000,000

and there's things in there that you would have no idea that are broken till you pull it apart. Been in a few wrecks, and repaired the cars myself to avoid insurance issues, and it adds up quick.

Also the airbag system is a one time use only system. Aside from the drivers side airbag everything else has to be trash. The seat sensors (150.00~), the main control unit (350.00~), all the impact sensors around the car(100.00~ each). It's not worth it unless you're looking for a car to gut out for the track/parts car/getting it for like 1,500-2,000.

Even if so, they probably wouldnt tell you. Most dont even need to examine the frame to determine if the value of the damage exceeds the value of the car. They usually only send their vehicles to salvage auctions. I would NEVER buy a vehicle that has a salvage title, or even an accident tainted carfax for that matter. It isnt worth the mystery and possibility of problems down the road and you will wind up spending more money than you ever intended. Save up some more money and buy an older one with a clean title. I seem to recall seeing a 2003 with 61k on it on ebay or another forum pretty recently in silver and the guy was asking about 10k. It was a wicked good deal and i almost got my brother to replace his STI with it, but he respectfully declined. GL bud

Have you had a mechanic you trust inspect it? That is the first thing you should do. I would be concerned because sometimes there is more damage there than you think. I agree with what most are saying, once you add up the cost of repairs + the price of the car, you'll realize you can buy an UNDAMAGED Z for the same price.
