News on tire feathering and Nissan response to tire feathering question
Somebody in another forum posted the following post. It concern a zerox copy they have of a new TSB (NTB03-006A) concerning the tire feathering problem. Has anybody heard about this?
<<"This TSB amends NTB03-006. This version contains updated VIN and Applied Date applications. Please discard all paper copies of the earlier bulletin."
Applied VINS...
Applied Date: Vehicles built before May 27, 2003
It's 5 pages and the copy I have includes a 6th page with the alignment specs. The specs appear to be printed from the ESM. ">>

In addition I sent this e-mail to Nissan as a prospective buyer:
"I am thinking of buying a 350Z. I have only one concern holding me back. I have read on many web sites including your own Z website of a problem with tire cupping or tire feathering on the front tires that produces noise when braking hits below 30 mph. Is this problem still happeining on the 2004's.? If I should experience this problem after buying my car what reaction can I expect from Nissan? Your response will determine whether I will buy this car."
This is what they wrote in response:
"Thank you for your interest in the most innovative vehicle we have
In regards to the question listed in your email, Not all 2003 350Z's aren't exhibiting a tire feathering concern. And also the case is reviewed on a case by case basis if and when the problem arises.
File number 4294228 has been created to document this concern. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to call 1-800-647-7261, Nissan Consumer Affairs and reference your file number."

When dropping off my Z for the Bose amp replacement, I mentioned that I was getting a lot of noise when braking below 30 mph. The service writer called out to the head tech who was walking by. He said he would look at it. When I picked up the car, both the service writer and head tech told me to bring the car in and they would send out the front wheels to get the tires rotated and then check out the alignment. This is the same place that told me 6 weeks earlier that there is nothing they can do, the way the car is designed gives feathering. I think Nissan has done some retraining of its service folks.
Curious when Nissan mechanics do an alignment is it done with weight (simulating driver) in the car? I know BMW's are done this way as are race cars. BMW dealers use sand bags. Race cars have someone sit in the car.

you'll notice a lot of road noise (especially at highway speeds and under braking at lower speeds)
the tire feathering refers to the unusual cupping (or feathering) that the inside of your front tires will do. you can feel it (if it's farther along in the stage) by running your hand along the inside of your tire. if the thickness of the tread is noticably lower at the beggining of each section than it is at the end of the same section, then you've got the issue. can't really think of a better way to describe it.

I've previously gotten the TSBs from the NHTSA website and the website lists this TSB as existing, but the files are conspicuously absent. ALL of them are absent when I previously retrieved them from this site before. This is supposed to be public info...
I know that "mandatory recalls" are public information and "voluntary recalls" are made public by the manufacturer.
TSB's (technical service bulletins) are not "officially" public information. They are simply internal bulletins supposedly to help Nissan service departments diagnose and repair problems found to be common to a large portion of a particular model vehicle. Of course TSB's tend to leak to the public very quickly these days. The Nissan web site has an area where you can purchase access to TSB's at a steep price.

I got an allignment at 14,000 called NNA and complained... Told them is this how they treat customers and I was no ordinary customer... the knew I was a well educated customer on the issue...
I just bought a life time alignment pass from firestone for $100, im going to go to them every 4 months... and when I get my rims put on.

The TSB is even announced in autoweek this week... just saw the article, says that their car was having problems so they decided to check out my350z.com and saw the 1000+ posts on this issue.... they then said there is a TSB out telling the dealerships to fix it, etc....
