In NJ getting off of route 9 onto the Garden State Parkway, I was rear ended. Stopped in traffic a lady flys into me going about 35-40. She was cool about the whole thing and rushed out to ask me If I am ok and assured me she would pay for any and all of the damages. Cop came through and made everything legit. I am getting a police report on Monday. Local body shop just had a look at it and said 4500 in parts and 4000 in labor. My car has over a hundred grand in mileage and Is a 2004 base. At most it could cost to an insurance company is 10000. So the question is, if my car is not at total loss and the adjuster does write me a check for fixing my car, do I attempt to do the fix myself? I am pretty good at DIY type of crap. Mechanically, I am a 6 out of 10. Take a look at the pictures and please let me know what you guys think.

To me, this **** is sad and I hate women drivers in NJ, but it happens and I want to get it fixed.

In NJ, if the cost to fix a vehicle exceeds 80% of the value of the car, they will total it. If the body shop said $8500 to fix it, it'll be totaled. You will also, however, have the ability to buy the car back for some nominal amount. Meaning, if they say it's worth $10k (and they give you $10k and take the car), you can keep the car and only take $9k from them. It would turn into a salvage at that time.
Damage cost will be highly dependent on if that rear panel needs to be repaired since it's a welded piece.
