I'll bet no one that laughed at me pulling up in the Civic at the last meet is second-guessing my decision now.

Not really. Ever see an F5(wind speeds of 250-275mph) Tornado 3/4s of a mile wide? Took out 1/2 of Lubbock,Tx in 1975. An F6, there is no F6 on the Fujitsu scale, hit Moore, OK May, 1999, wind speeds at one point measured 319mph, nothing in its path above ground survived. It ripped every tree and blade of grass out of the ground as it moved through, one of my colleagues couldn't find one of his cars for a week. One woman's body wasn't found for 10 days, she was small and I drove past the area where they found her body 200 yards from I35 commutting to work.

Moore's tornado was 7 miles north of my house. Texas and Oklahoma aren't Dorothy's Land of OZ. Tornado Alley is on a line about 75-100 miles on each side and runs from just North of Dallas, through OKC and on to just north of Wichita, Kansas which was also hit by a supercell F5 on the same day Moore,OK was. Our damage is more localized than your Hurricanes but the devastation can be much worse over a smaller area.

Ditto, that May 3rd tornado was scary. After looking at the chopper view of the path .

The thing is, you can have a tornado drop out of any severe thunderstorm and very large hail. I've lost 2 roofs to hail in the last 10 years. Softball size hail, I'm not kidding, does happen here and we get gust fronts coming out of storms at 75-80mph with considerable damage.

Whats the weirdest are the "Downbursts" which hit randomly from some storms. All of a sudden, it feels like a giant has just sat down on your house. It groans, creaks and settles sometimes breaking your windows out from the downward burst. One hit my house about 10 years ago and my wife and dog almost jumped out of their skins, but it didn't do any damage.

Unfortunately, I know too much about the weather here and know when really bad weather is coming close to my area. I say that because it makes me feel like I'm waiting for an air raid like the London Blitz. I've had many occasions when I really did NOT want to know, its pretty nerve-racking.

Yeah, tell me about it!

I washed my Z on Friday evening and had to do it all over again on Sunday.

Then, guess what? It rained again today--all day, and my Z is again a mess.

WTF!
