Depends on models.

Track vs. Base convertible (miles?) I would say Track, anything else Vette. If its a Z06, the its an easy answer off the bat.

The vette will also likely retain a higher resale value.

It would be an enthusiast Z vs a stock 2002 convertible Vette.

i hope your not asking opinions based on performance, because if you are, the Z has absoloutly no chance against a vet, any vet.

I guess I was hoping ot hear fomr someone who owned one. I'm more concerned with parts breaking, things rattling, general build quality.. I'll be buying one out of warranty if I buy one at all, so I'm a little nervous. My dad had a ZR1 when they came out and I remmber it being built like ****. He also says the corvete is not made well, but also said everyone should own one once! He has a nsx now.

Vette will be a hands down better built car, that simple. For one it is a 50k$ car while the best Z is a 34k$ car, thats a signifigant difference and the associated quality will be there as well.

The only questions are this point are insurance, appearance, and covertible good or bad, otherwise its a landslide in the vettes favor.

After reading about all these posts about Z paint quality problems I would jump on the vette instead.

Yes, 97-2003 is all C5 I believe, though coming soon will be the C6's and I am not too sure how they will be accepted.

I owed a 2000 c5 corvette; it was the biggest mistake of my life. The entire purchasing and ownership experience was not pleasant. When I bough my Corvette, I believe I paid about $44,000 for it. As you're probably well aware, Chevrolet has a pretty tight grip on the Corvette market, and they only make a certain number a year regardless of demand. The obvious resason for this tactic is to keep the price up. While the car I paid for was $44,000, I believe the dealer walked away with 6k in their back pocket for being nothing more than an order taker. THe sales experience was horrible and the maintenance deptartments of 3 different dealerships I went to was just as bad.
I considered it a 8,000 mile road test. I'll never own another one.

I have seen the opposite. My brother in law has a Z06 with about 35k on the clock and almost no problems and didnt get price gouged at all.

If you want to talk about price gouging take a look at Z's. They having a higher percentage of profit built into their price than most any other car on the market. A good example is a 34k track Z has 3500 of built in profit for the dealership before they mark it up. I believe my 51k M3 had about 4-5k of padding, but I didnt pay MSRP for it either.

Without checking, I believe the vettes (not convert) are lighter than the Z, if not they are very close.

I wouldn't really start in on the performance issues and responsiveness because the C5's will destroy the Z in every aspect of performance, it is just a better sports car, and reflected in the price.

Then bring up Z06 and you will reallllly destroy a Z

Have driven a C5 convertible, Z06, and a 350Z (touring I think) and a large number of other cars. The 350Z is a more responsive and has a faster turn in, but overall in performance even a base vette destroys it.

Its simply not a valid comparison, the Z is not in the same league. Not bashing either car, just saying its apples and oranges. You would have to compare a Z06 to an M3, Boxster S, 911, AMG or something else of that caliber.

Not really. The Z06, not the regular vet, would actually destroy every car on that list. Not even a comparison there...but thats besides the point of this thread..

Z06 would keep up and be competitive, not destroy those cars. The E46 M3 keeps up just fine with the Z06, i know from experience, friend of mine has a C5-Z06.

Some of the AMG cars are very very quick even though they rarely look it, but nonetheless the vette is probably the strongest overall performer in that list, but it certainly doesn't "DESTOY" the rest of the competition, for sure not the M3.

The Z06 would destroy those cars. You have to move up to a Vipers, 911 Turbo or Ferrari to find competition.

From Car and Driver.
We were right. The updated Z06 obliterates the previous one. Zero to 60 mph your thing? The new car scampers there in four seconds flat, 0.3 second quicker than the quickest '01 Z06 we tested and only 0.1 behind the four-wheel-drive 911 Turbo.

In the quarter-mile there's an even bigger difference. The new car did it in 12.4 seconds at 116 mph, whereas the 385-hp car needed 12.7 seconds to hit 113 mph. For an only five-percent increase in power, the new Z06 certainly extracts quite a bit. For the record, both cars we're comparing here were tested by the same driver using the same test equipment.
