Smog Check Experience in Ca
I bought my Z from Minesota, so when I brought the car into CA, I have to do a smog check even the car is brand new. The new smog check costs more about $75 for me. They put the rear wheels on the roller and do the smog check. You have to turn off the traction control, otherwise the car won't run. They has to keep the car in certain RPM and speed when doing the test. Since the Z manual is 6 speed, they have to do this test in the 3rd gear.
After the test is done, all the ABS, VDC warning ligths will lit. But you drive the car a few miles, the warning lights are gone.
They also tested the gas cap, they took your gas cap out and tested it on the smog check machine.
The whole test took a long time almost an hour.

The way my car is set up. But the first Calif. smog test is a few years away, so I'm not going to sweat it now.
I wonder how much of the mods I should remove before the test?

I'm curious, why did you purchase your Z out of state? (Price?)

No, I did not have breaking because I have to register the car within 1 month (CA law)
Calif Nissan dealers either did not have a 350Z in stock or were charging 3-5K over MSRP in Nov 2002 when I got my Z. I found a dealer in Wi. that sold me exactly what I wanted for MSRP. What we ended up doing was having it shipped to a dealer right next to my house in CA (from Japan, it was just being loaded onto the ship 1 week after I ordered it) and they dealer preped it. Ironically, I picked it up from the exact dealer that tried to rip me off for over 5K over MSRP and when I picked it up, got my keys handed to me by the same guy that said I would never find a Z in 2003 in Ca. for MSRP.
All I did was send a check to the WI dealer for the car and wrote a seperate check to the Ca. dealer for Tax & Lic. I avoided smog issues all together.
