Wow dude... good thing your still here in one piece! Sounds like a very scary situation but hopefully you learned something useful from it.
As for your TCS not kicking in... were you decelerating? If you lifted off the throttle its very possible the VLSD started the sliding. The VLSD has deceleration lock as well and if its really slick, it can essentially do the same thing as pulling the e-brake. One time I made the bad mistake of downshifting coming to a stop light on ice. The rear locked up due to the deceleration and spun me around. I managed to do a full 360 (whilst still in my lane BTW) and not hit anyone, coming to a stop just before the light facing the correct direction. Honestly it seemed like I did it on purpose but it was a complete accident...
Doesn't look like 16K of damage but the airbags are probably half the cost right there. Then if the diff has moved, the subframe obviously is damaged and its possible there is frame damage. I'm surprised that is all the damage you got with a 18-wheeler hitting you. He must of slowed down well below 60mph otherwise I'd suspect the damage to be much worse.
Anyway might I suggest instead of going to an AWD Evo or something, get another Z for cheap and buy a older AWD car for winter. If you can go with two cars you can still have a Z... then put a rollcage in the Z so you can track it. I don't think i'd be too comfortable with tracking my daily driver without a rollcage after seeing some of the rollover accidents on track day videos. Anyway good luck with whatever you decide and we're glad your still alive.

I was surprised to hear the total myself. Apparently the airbags are, in the appraiser's own words "horridly expensive". The damage it caused the seat and the door panel was apparently expensive too. Underbody/suspension/rear diff damage was pretty extensive. The unibody subframe was slightly damaged as well.

Having a Z and an AWD would be nice, but right now I'm pretty much set on getting an Evo X. In fact, I was at the Mitsu dealership today looking at one. I'm OK with taking a break from the Z for now. Like I said earlier, my dad has an HR with < 8k miles on it so I can still drive one anytime. In a perfect world I'll come across an 07/08 DB with low miles, when I'm ready...

Little work and it would be a great track car. Just a flesh wound.
Glad your OK

I don't know how long I'll be able to hold out on modding the Evo. I'd really like to keep it stock but we all know that's not going to happen. Especially with how inexpensive it is to make that thing fast.
