But being a known issue with Nissan then i stand corrected. otherwise it is mostly driver error.
my 03 performance 6mt has no tranny issues. And i baby her, drive her hard, and whip through gears like no other. Not one problem. I do however change my fluids every 20 k. perhaps that helps, perhaps it does not...who knows. As far as i know being 30....cept for the EVO previously destroyed by the old owner none of my vehicle, even the Z has had tranny issues.

MY 5th gear synchros went out. I couldn't shift from 4th to 5th without going at a 90 degree shift, unlike a 45 degree shift that is normal.
It's like the smoothness went out.

(steel braided clutch line may be of help) the rubber line may with out you knowing loose some psi on the clutch allowing it to maybe cause the issue to worsen.
do al of you with the issues have steel braided or rubber??

Just out of curiosity, people that bought the 03-04's brand new, how many km's/miles did they put on the cars before they started experiencing the 3rd gear synchro problems and the clicking?
I have an 03 with 44,000km (~27,000 miles) and I don't have any of the problems described. Everything's original on the car. There are no mods on it (for now).
Also, what's the percentage of 03-04's that had transmission problems? (If that's even possible to tell).

mine does not grind unless I try to shift very quickly. otherwise its fine for everyday driving. I plan on keeping mine as long as possible so I'll probably upgrade the tranny at some point anyway.

I'm on my 5th transmission in my z.
I am 54 years old and I have owned many vehicles with standard transmissions over the years.
It wasn't until I had the 009 model transmission installed until the problems went away. It has been in the Z for 20,000 miles now.
Best test is to get the Z up to highway speed, hold the clutch peddle in, and shift between the gears. If it grinds, it is a problem.

I see tons of diff cars daily and most of the synchro issues with many cars are driver error. Grinding gears and or some not even using the clutch to disengage if not at all to hardly clutching to begin with. yes, nissans may have a synchro issue but mostly the issue lies with the driver not being able to find the gears correctly.
The problem is the synchro design in the MT for this car. I have never driven an MT with such a rough feel before, and never one that clicks harshly into gear (without a grind) when it's brand new. I have thought long and hard about the fact that maybe the clutch throw is too short on the vehicle, or something that prevents the gears from fully disengaging. But almost nothing will make it smooth. So I just drive it like any other tranny and hope it won't fail.

I am curious - Dr. Venture, since you are a mechanic, what would cause this rough shifting (even before the grinding occurs). Is it the clutch fluid needs replacing? The clutch lines?

My 3rd & 4th are getting pretty bad, 3rd especially. I have to shift it in pretty slow to keep it from grinding. I'm way out of warranty and poor too so i'm really hoping to read changing fluids will get rid of it...

There is a common clicking noise with Z's, but it is the rear differential. It's my understanding it's not actually bad for the car, people just don't like the soudn. I have an 04.5, it has always made the clicking noise. I bought it at 33k, it's got 75k now.
