I have been having this problem with my 03, 95k miles, when I turn off the VDC it doesn't seem to grind and drives smoother. Has anyone else tried this?

If only there was a way to put in a transmission that doesnt have these problems that bolts up. Maybe, one from a newer model that the problem may have been remedied...

Haha I know.. I was just wondering because where I live, repairing it will be extremely cheaper than importing a CD009 and installing it.

Although, there's nothing currently wrong with my current M6 (knock on wood!)

I had my 3rd and 5th gear synchro replaced Feb '10. i bought the car in Nov '09 and it was still under a limited powertrain warranty so i got it done fo' free. the job cost insurance more than the whole transmission costs, and wouldnt you know it, couple months later they're grinding again. Tranny guy (lolz) said that there was a "nick in the synchro."

If they have Z's by you, you shouldnt need to import one, just take the tranny off of an 06. check your local parking lot if need be

Haha I saw a 06 on a dealership lot, I guess if the time comes, Ill have to pay them a visit during the night ... how much does a CD009 weights? Can I steal it by myself or should I bring a friend? lol

as long as you have a tranny jack you could probably do it. Keep in mind, many hands make light work

Yeah lighter and faster! lol...

I live in Mexico, so Z's are rare here, I just got myself a 03 LS with 30k miles... so just thinking ahead in case the tranny fails... although I have not check what model of M6 I have right now, Ill do that on the next oil change

well let me help you out my friend. 350z trannys are bad, i recently replaced 3 synchros plus all bearings in it. In USA you guys tend to buy another one, but in my country we try to fix everything, so do i. My tranny is like new, works like a charm, but honestly, if the one you're checking is making sounds, then don't buy it or get it for dirt cheap. Start ordering the baulk ring, generally they're the problem.

Another thing i've noticed is that when you change your input shaft bearing the car stop making noise when stopped, or at least it reduces by a ton.

NOTE: 03 350z 101K miles

I know where you are coming from, we have that approach here too, how much did you spend fixing it? Mine is working like a charm (knock on wood), but I wanna now what I'm getting into..

Unhappy 03 6 speed mt problems

yep they sure do just droped off 03 for 3rd gear grind. new cd009 tranny got for 1900 plus if its out you know you schould change clutch etc. 2450 in parts, out of warrenty, only 46000miles. I am new here and wanted to say tks for all the info about the bad trans, BTW
dealer wants 550 to install.

I got my 06 CD009 transmission with 46k miles used for $500 shipped and I saved on labor costs since my headers and downpipes were being installed as well and the tranny had to be removed due to significant amounts of rust.

$550 sounds about right for a tranny install but maybe if your lucky, you can get done cheaper at a different shop but the likelihood of that happening is highly unlikely unless it turns into a DIY project.

Does anyone worry that replacing the tranny will decrease the value of z if you intend on keeping your car for the long hall? I hear car collectors constantly referring to "original engine and transmission."

I have a 03 350z, and I have problems with my 3rd gear. When shifting to 3rd from 2nd sometimes it makes a grinding noise. Not all the time. Just when I am shifting hard.

I have an 03. I've only grinded my gears twice since i bought the car brand new. They were both my fault, and I was trying to shift way beyond my ability.

Nissan did some revisions with 04.5; many state that these trannys have less 'issues'

They have their own problems, but for the most part they are great. I crappy driver can destroy the best of manuel transmissions.

I wouldnt worry about that right now, these are not collector cars. Maybe in 35 years from now LOL. Will you still have your z then and will the mileage be under 20k? If so than rebuild it do not swap it.

Thanks B. No it won't be under 20K in 35 years LOL...but she will still be mine.

As to the grind issue - I too have had this experience (03 Touring).

Reading through these threads a few months back made me shift (no pun intended) my opinion on the problem. Like many others, I thought the blame lies on the tranny - not on the driver - because I have never had this experience before in my manual transmissions.

But I have heard the critics who indicated that the fault lies with the driver - not the tranny. So I tried placing the blame on myself, re-think the way I shift her (particularly in third - sometimes in second or fourth) to avoid the grind. It's not perfect, but is has worked - not necessarily because I suck at stick, but because I need to know my own ride better.

Now, even when I'm driving aggressively, I am very intentional about that particular throw (2nd to 3rd). When you do it right, the gear box will generally guide you in. That doesn't mean that you have to shift slowly, but it may slow you down in the beginning. If you jam it in, your gonna grind - at least in my ride when you are + 3.5K rpm.

In the end it made sense for me to save the tranny and re-train my throwing arm.
