Default Drive 800+ miles or tow behind a Uhaul

As the title might suggest, I am moving in the very near future, from Ohio to Ga. I have never done this with a car I care about, so I pose the question: Would it be better/safer to drive the Z separate of the Uhaul, or tow it behind on one of those front-wheel-trailers you can get? The Z is an '07 AT. I am looking for suggestions as well as practical experience from those who may have done this in the past. Any help is greatly appreciated.
-mods, if this has been covered in the past, I am not aware after searching the forums.

What's wrong with driving the car? Is it just you moving? Or do you have others with you? Personally, I would drive the Z instead of having it hauled. Oh, and if your car is an auto, I would not suggest those front wheel trailers. Unless I'm misreading your post, that is.

I had no choice to pull my WRX home 1300 miles on one of those tow dollies and I'll never do it again. The ramps don't retract all the way and rubbed on my sideskirts during mild bumps. Not to mention the beating the front bumper took from the debris being kicked up by the tow vehicle. Keep in mind this car is my DD/winter beater so it didn't bother me all that bad. I couldn't imagine using one of these with a car I care about. I drove my brand new Z from CO to MN and enjoyed every mile. Drive the 800 miles.

Use the Uhaul flat bed trailer.

If you can't drive the car because you're moving yourself, then a flat bed trailer is a much better option, IMO.

no, you're right. I hadn't had my coffee yet.

I live by myself up here. I just made the drive in June, so maybe I'll just fly someone up here to help.

thanks guys!!!

I'd drive it. Going through the mountains is a lot of fun. I've driven from Indy to Florida a couple times and always had a blast.

Move into a hotel.
Movers pick up your stuff.
Drive to destination. When you arrive your stuff will be there.

I'm guessing that he doesn't have enough to require movers and can do all the packing himself. I've been there and done that. I've also moved my own vehicles, either by driving them or having them shipped.

Yeah, I can fit my whole apartment into a 10' truck.
I have the option of flying someone up to help, or just loading everything up and doing it myself. Did you have any issues transporting a Z using the flat-bed trailer?

I've never trailered my Z, but I have used an auto shipper. No issues. Also, I think using a flat bed trailer hitched to your moving truck is probably a good way to go if you're going to move by yourself. Just make sure you use the correct tow hitch. You'll want a heavy duty one to support the weight of the trailer and the Z.

If you can afford it,have movers do the hauling and you make the drive.I drove to GA from TX about 3 weeks ago and loved the 1900 miles round trip in the Z.

Consider not doing a one-way rental on the truck. Leave your Z in OH with a friend. Drive the U-Haul to GA, unload, and drive back to OH. Even with the U-Haul, 800 miles is only a one-day trip. One way U-Haul rentals are pretty expensive, you may save a lot by doing a round trip, even considering the gas. Then drive your Z back to GA.

Run the numbers and see how it works. It could be cheaper and easier on your Z.

If you are moving, I have to recommend PODS. Wife and I moved all the way from Oregon to Indy and it cost us just under $700. You load and unload it yourself, but it's totally worth it and nothing is cheaper.

I just did this twice. Moved from Erie, PA, to Atlanta in January, and just moved from Atlanta to Connecticut 6 weeks ago. Both times I put my baby on the auto transport provided by U-Haul, company paid for it so cost wasn't an issue. Two things with the auto transport though: unless you offset the height of the loading ramps (by driving it up on a curb, etc), your Z will drag bottom while loading & unloading. You will also want to put a 1" block of wood under each front tire, or you will scrape your front lip on the front of the trailer. And once you get into the Appalachian Mountains, it is going to kill you to be driving a U-Haul towing your Z barely going 45 up a hill, rather than shredding tarmac in your baby.

I did this in 2009 when I moved from Sacramento to Seattle. I had a 14' truck with my benz on a flatbed trailer and had no problems. Did the 800 mile trip overnight.

The uhaul flatbeds are surprisingly nice, aluminum trailers. The trailer tracked really well and could hardly tell it was there.Plus, people seemed to oogle over the car on the trailer. Maybe due to the straps making it looked slammed.

Rent the uhaul if you have things to take and a trailer that puts all 4 wheels on it. No mileage, no wear and tear. Just a piece of mine.
