Cool site! Virginia has a plate maker online, but since I might be living in OH or IN in a month, this is way helpful.

Default California plates

I see a few fellow CA Z'ers mention they were able to reserve a personalized plate without the car. How do you do that?

Thanks,

Dave

I was wondering the same thing about Illinois. Does anyone know how to go about doing it here? Unfortunately, we just got a new plate design which isn't on that side yet.

For some bizzare reason Illinois has both vanity plates and personalized plates. Vanity plates are defined as up to 3 numbers only or 3 to 7 letters only. Personalized plate are a minimum of 3 letters plus at least 1 number to a maximum of 7 characters. If I am reading their description right, 350Z wouldn't even qualify. They also charge a lot more for the vanity plates.

The DMV (called the Secretary of State in IL) has been plagued with bribery and corruption scandals, so this doesn't supprise me.

I just went to the DMV and told them I wanted to get a custom plate but didn't have the car yet. They said no problem, the plates take a while to arrive anyway, and if I still don't have the car when they arrive, they will put them aside for me until I'm ready. (Getting anything with "350Z" in it was a problem, but that's another story.) I heard someone else say they wouldn't do it without the car, so maybe it just depends on who's at the counter.

Don't know he situation in Illinois although I grew up outside Chicago....OK so I never really grew up but that's not the point...In California I was able to go to the DMV website..check on availability of the plate I wanted...download the form which I filled out and took to my local AAA office...the plates cost $41 and they will cahh me in 4 to 6 weeks when they come in...they will hold them until I call them and tell them the car has arrived.

Hope this helps.

for ca you can just go to https://vrir.dmv.ca.gov/ipp/ippMain.jsp

You can check to see if the plate you want is available, and order it all online. I think you only need to have the car when you pick it up.

Cool

In California, the car must be registered and plated before you can pick up your vanity plates. AAA has had mine for three months now. I have to bring in the original plates once I receive them and make the exchange. I figure it will probably be at least 30 days after I get the car.
