Default GRRR Shift **** removal help needed

YES I have done a search and I know this is an age old topic, but i really don't think exact instructions on how to properly do it have been posted yet...or at least i can't find them. That picture of channel locks turning the shifter using a towel that people keep referring others to isnt helping me. That method could damage the tranny i'm guessing unless you apply counter force on the shifter rod while turning the shift ****.

...so I'm trying to hold the base of the shifter still while turning the **** counter clockwise. The problem is, unless I can move the shift boot down somehow, I will destroy the shift boot. I've already marred it up a little even though i covered it with a towel. I want to clamp directly onto the metal shifter rod. Anyone done this? There seems to be a clip that holds the shift boot up and I want to take it off without breaking it.

This is killing me. I have this shiny new sparco x-speed **** sitting here and i'm itching to put it on

When I purchased my shift ****, it came with instructions on how to remove the stock shifter. It involved diassembling the console assembly to get access underneath the shift boot.

The instructions are at home... let me remember to do so... for you and as a service to the board.
