You get pulled over...He is going to hit you up for some money. The guy probably went back to the squad car so the cop would not see that there are Americans in the car. The cost would have sky rocketed.
Mexicans pay Mexican Fees.
Americans pay American Fees.
Its almost like a routine to just pull out 100 to 200 pesos when you get pulled over. Its a part of life.
An accident... Now thats a whole different story. You dont want to be in one.

And next question... what DOES happen if you're in an accident?

you wanna here what happens when you get into an accident!
one of my friends rented a motorbike...and got hit by a bus in cancun
it was totally the busses fault...the story is so long and i dont really remember all of it
all i know is that mexicans were thretening him from all sides (the cops, the motorbike renters)
all i remember is that there was a huge headache over everything..the us ambassoder or someone of that nature had to get involved
it was a huge mess

OK let me see if I can say it pretty quick.
Its 1am and have been out.
The two cars get towed away... The one that is at fault goes to jail until he or someone for him is able to pay for the damages of the other. If not sure who is at fault both go to jail.
If your an American and you were in an accident. Most of the time you are screwed. Because it always the Americans fault.
Rule for Mexico... Always take a cab that is issued by the Hotel or that has a registered badge on the windshield. Cabs overall are the safest, unless you can afford your own tour guide.
