Build 350z or GT-R
That's about $16-17 grand I'll miss out on, would like to put a bigger down payment on the GT-R... Or save in time keep the Z N/A.
Just need a 4 car garage.
I don't know just how much they'll depreciate. Quite a few NSX NA2's out there but they're keeping their value. Then again the GT-R may not hold up just due to the warranty violations, all that sheer torque just waiting to blow out 1st gear. Maybe not. I ask myself just how much and how long it'll take the R8 to get closer to $50-60k.

Driving GTR makes you a little more special, but for me I keep the Z and wait for bigger and better things. If you need the feel to speed, don't turbo the Z, just go get the GTR. My friend regret spending $25K on his and now he has no choice, but to drive it because of a wreck he was in. He told he could of gotten a Z06 at least for the money he spent and time used., he will do no more mods for his Z. Do what satisfies you, but I advised against boosting your Z.

Buy what makes you happy!!
GT-R is a amazing car, it can run 9-10 sec 1/4 times all day and still take you comfortably to dinner that night. If your plan is to do a Alpha 9 kit and drag race the car dont forget that you will need to spend a good amount of money in transmission upgrades also and possibly a built motor depending on how much power you want to make.

I don't want to compete or really care what I run with a built Z, I just want to go somewhere where I can let that kind of power go without getting arrested. My best time is 13.8 on my Nitto NT05 (295/35-18), which took me a while to do. The mods: Volk GT-S wheels, Stance XR coilovers/camber/toe/sway bars ect, Fast Intentions dual 3" exhaust (in prep for twin turbos), intake. Probably no gain or lost power on the exhaust.
That's pretty much it for performance, figure on doing the twin turbo build with the purchase of the car and it's taken me a while to save for a full build. A few cosmetic mods painting here and there, 06 headlights, wrapping, speakers/stereo.
As I see it, just enough to clean the car up... the essentials.

Stay with the Z my freind GTRS are fast but IMO not as fun as a z as amatter of fact any Z that I can think of is fun. as much as I like AWD ( currently dirving a subie) I would stay with the Z all day
Test drove a Challenger SRT8 392 for the fun of it, was nicely surprised. Handling wise it's a sluggish boat by comparison to my Z but got up in the straight line and was pretty comfortable, sounds so sweet.
Still waiting to get a ride in the GT-R, because you know the dealers won't let you drive it, and try to take out a Mercedes C63 coupe. There's a guy in my area with an alpha 9 GT-R.

Are you planning on doing $50k in mods to your Z? I'm not sure how modding an 04 Z is getting you into GT-R territory.
But to answer your question, if you are going to beat on it like you say you are, the GT-R will probably be a lot more expensive to maintain. Since there are so many Z's, parts and service are easier to come by.

I'm not bias and I like all sports cars of many different price ranges... so you're saying I can't go from a 350z to a GT-R??? What about when I ditched my built/turbo scion tc to a Z, different cars right. What ever happened to driving cars just because you like them... My cars do not have to have a purpose other how I want to drive them.
So to answer your question... Yes it was thought out. GT-R looks fantastic, has all the speed for whatever situation I'd apply it for, and has world class handling.
Well yeah, in the long run if I keep it.. Hopefully not that much if I do as much of the work as I can in my free time.
