Default Steering Wheel Locked

I have an 04 350z with 60,000 miles, automatic. The car is in great shape.

My son just tried to back up the car. However, the key will not turn and the steering wheel is locked.

Anyone else experience this situation? Any insight before calling the dealer would be most helpful.

Thanks.

Paul

You have to kinda turn the wheel a little while turning the key IIRC. It locks if you turn the wheel while the car is off.

I tried that. The wheel/column is locked tight.

you probably have already tried this but applying the brake while turning the wheel one way or the other often helps me.

Usually you can just wiggle the steering wheel back and forth as you turn the key and all is good. If that doesn't work maybe you need to have it towed to the dealer.

I tried it again and it broke free. Good lesson for my son.
Thanks.

Once again - good lesson for my son. The car is his in about 45 days.

Interestingly enough, my son's friend experienced the exact issue in our driveway earlier today in his 350Z.

These z's are pretty sensitive. They're also an absolute blast to drive.

Great forum - quick response - thanks again.

glad it worked out. Im sure you already do this but tell him if he is reckless with it, you'll take it away and give him a moped!
