Sorry to say but the Z33 puts the Z31 and Z32 to shame.

The 240Z was cool for its time, and I still think the 2nd-gen (Z32) 300ZX (especially the TT) is a great car. But (no offense intended, just my opinion) I always thought the Z31 was SOOO lame and ugly and it kind of ruins the Z name. I wish they never made that blight on the auto world, and even worse it shares the same name with a really good Z. The other embarassments to the Z name is the disco-era 280ZX 2+2 (black and gold -- ugh!) and similar fat, underpowered pieces of crap.

I think the 350Z is the best Z ever, but I still have respect for the Z32 300ZX. I always wanted one of those, but I am so glad the new Z came out because now I can get a new car that's even better.

When I explain the history behind the Z to people, I mention the original 240Z, and the 90-96 300ZX, and try to pretend the ones in between never existed!

hey hey hey whoa!!! You are forgetting that the older Z's come from the eighties.
From the eighties have spawned leather zipper cladded jackets, bandanas, movies like pretty in pink, music from poison, white lion, parachute pants, no internet, the apple computer, "growing pains", break dancing, "boom" boxes, cassette tapes, video tapes, aweful makeup, atari 2600, and yes the cars....things that are condidered the bane of americas history today but once were great and heralded as societies greatest acheivements.

One should realize that while now these things are old and crappy, later they will be recognized as important steps that led to the great things we have today, without which the new 350 would not be possible

...its evolution!

That's a good point, but it's interesting how some cars are just chalked up to a victim of the times, but others have enduring quality. For example, a Jag E-Type isn't laughed at now even though they were made in the 60s and 70s. Likewise the 240Z might have been driven by men with gold chains, perms and bushy moustaches in the 70s, but it's got some respect today as an honest sports car. But the 280ZX black and gold 2+2? Puh-leeze (going back to a Steve Martin routine from the 70s). Will sports car enthusiasts in 10 or 20 years covet that car as a sought-after classic? I doubt it. And the Z31 I think will be quickly forgotten, and rightly so. I'd like to think that the 350Z is a future classic, but only time will tell.
