Default Is $400-450 a reasonable price for master/slave cylinder replacement?

My clutch pedal is sticking and not coming up all the way. A shop quoted me $400-450 to replace the master and slave for the clutch. He said it was a rough estimate and he would need to call me back when the parts are in but he wrote an invoice for me that says around $430 or so. Put down a deposit of $60 and left the car there.

Is this a reasonable price to swap out both? I read there are rebuild kits but I really don't have the time, space or energy to try to figure that one out, rather pay someone to do it and warranty the work.

I called a place near my house that works on racing and imports exclusively and they have good reviews for quality work but i think the guy was lying to me or just trying to charge me an insane price. He said the labor to do the slave was $900. Then he said I need to do both because otherwise we'll have to bleed twice. master and slave cylinder for the clutch is around $300-350 for the parts alone so we're looking at at least $1200 out the door. He also said you have to drop the tranny to reach the slave and while we're there, might as well do a clutch. Clutch job is $1000 including resurfacing the flywheel.

I already know this guy is full of **** but he was nice so i said thanks and hung up. He said there was a Z there last week with the same problem.. $350 for parts only for the master and slave? $900 for the labor. What a load.

What did everyone get charged when they changed out the master and slave?

I am reading it's most likely the master cylinder that is causing the problem with the pedal sticking and given that it's a common issue with our cars it sounds right but if I got quoted $430 to do both, it sounds ok to me.

I just paid $450 (labor) to have a clutch/flywheel/master/slave replaced. Upgraded to the ZSpeed CSC and the Wilwood master, which ran me $490 together. So essentially $1040 in parts & labor.. but there was a clutch/flywheel kit installed as well. I think $430 just for master/slave install is a little much.

What year is your car ?

06 and older $35 total for rebuild kits, takes me less than 2 hours working in my home garage. I would do it for $100 , for local Z owners.

Oh well it's $430 for the labor and parts actually. not sure how much the cylinders cost though.. if they total like $200 or even $350 like that one guy said then they'd be doing it for like $100 which wouldnt make sense to me but if they'll do it I'll take it.

Oh if its $430 for parts and labor then I guess it's not too bad. However you may get the same problem down the road with the sh1tty oem slave cylinder

Yeah, I think the CSC is about $340, $175 or so for master; something like that.

07-08 is a little different story. The older Z I don't have to drop the trans to do a slave.

It's an 05. But dont you have to drop the transmission to get the slave cylinder? Or were you referring to just rebuilding the master? I wouldn't mind that at all as long as it fixes the sticky clutch pedal issue. I read somewhere I can get a $15 rebuild kit from fontana nissan if I'm not mistaken?

Are you near Orange County?
If it'll fix the issue, then I would rather do that even though I put down a $60 deposit. Beats $450 when money's tight

I believe there was a recall regarding the clutch slave cylinder. You may need to verify whether is apply to you 05.

06 and older is an external slave , 2 bolts and the line, come right off. Very simple to do.

Oh really? So I guess the shop wasn't crazy to charge me $430, I was thinking he would never do that if he needed to drop the transmission.

The other shop I called however, lied to me I guess or was misinformed.
I guess it's better for me that it's external.

Both slave and master on an '05 are two bolts and one line removal/replacement. IMHO $400+ is a ripoff for what should be an hour of work. Upgrade to the ZSpeed Willwood kit though.
