Second Fuel Tank?
So my buddy and I were talking about doing a top gear style race next year across the U.S, He will be starting in Jersey, I will be starting from Raleigh, NC, and we will be arriving in Huntington Beach, CA. His dad is a pilot and has a little piper arrow so we think it will be somewhat close. My question is this, Is there anyone running a sceond tank of fuel and if so how do you plumb it?
I was trying to think of a way to put in the cubby behind the seat where the Sub woofer would go, but then I remember the pumps being right there and it would be a pita if i ever have to work on them. I've seen a fuel cell in the spare tire compartment, but I wouldn't want to run without it just in case. I was also thinking behind the rear speaker and the rear strut, but in that situation i would be worried about fumes etc. in the passenger compartment. I drew up a very crude idea of how i thought i could have it just drain into the OEM tank without the need to splice into the lines, but I don't think that would cause it to overflow and just utterly fail.
Again, this whole thing was just a thought and I was just seeing if it has been done, and if so how.
I haven't thought that far ahead, The idea was basically us just talking while drinking and since then I couldn't get it out of my head.

You'll definitely want a splice with a switch though. Draining into the OEM tank will lead to future headaches.
thats what I thought. I remember hearing somewhere that there were some ford? trucks that had two tanks and you had to switch between tanks which is what i think is what your saying please correct me if i'm wrong.
Off to do some research I guess

Lots of older 3/4 tons had them (not sure about newer), RVs, semis... It's a pretty common system. Depending where you splice, you may need an auxillary pump as well.

My buddy has a newer (2010) truck that has the extra tank. Its great for long trips specially when towing. Its really simple its a matter of just hitting a switch and starting the new tank.
I would imagine that is the best way about doing this.
