If removing salt is the goal, just use a garden hose when temperature allows. Keep the hose indoor and above freezing to keep ice forming. If the hose cannot be stored in above-freezing temperature, drain it. That way there is no ice to block the water when it's time to use the hose.

It takes me about 10 minutes to spray the body and the undercarriage; I don't bother to wash and to dry it. The grimy film covering the paint keeps water spots from forming on the paint surface.

Also, please don't run your fingers on salt-caked paint; that made me cringe.

I don't really see the point of getting automatic car washes unless you get free ones for life like some. It takes like 30 minutes tops to hand wash it, and you can get areas that an automated one can't XD. Now, I guess if you're in a hurry and need one bad....Go for it?

I took my repainted dark gray '93 Mercedes 190e through a machine wash one time driving cross country... I simply "couldn't wait." As soon as it was finished, I saw LINES, swirl LINES across the entire car... EVERYWHERE. Never again.

the thing with most of car washes is that they rarely clean the brushes, dirt gets trapped on them and then it is rubbing on your car acting kinda like sandpaper. since i have had my car i have only used a brush on it a couple off times, now i get all my cleaning stuff from detailed image.... microfiber mit and grit gaurds are the key

Yeah, that's why you don't see the point.

beats the time i went to a self wash early spring in indiana and destroyed my authentic cwest front lip on a small heap of ice in the dip where the drain is.

Now I have a garage and I just use a hose if the climate is not permitting of outdoor wash.

I just got MD ART pipes so now after i drive in the salt i try to wash the underbody to keep em nice and shiny.

Nobody cares about your "dilemma"

Why is your car running while you are washing anyway?

If you care about your paint not looking like crap you won't go to a drive thru with brushes.

OP did you end up washing your car over the weekend? Saturday night after work I got home and the hose wasn't frozen so I went outside and cleaned my car. Froze my a$$ off but it is worth it for the Z. Sunday I go to switch cars in the driveway due to the forecast for this week ( I only try to drive the B13 in the snow) and I come out to my car COVERED in bird crap. It was so much it looked like a flying cow took a dump right on my hood. So I got out the bucket and washed my car again then put it right in the garage. In the end it was worth it, freezing my nads off on both Saturday and Sunday.

Nothing better than a shiny clean car after a while of just dirt and salt and crap on it. Really makes you feel accomplished.
