I also set cruise around 75-80, highest gear and ave. approx. 26.5 or plus a little. That's with a/c on or off, and I do have a few mods, i.e. Vortech, etc.

no mods, normal '03 (UK) and i've had 36.2 mpg on cruise 70-80mph motorways in 6th on a long trip, usually get around 20 tho

tend to hover around 2.5 - 3k rpm if i'm trying to be economical

3000-3200rpms seems to be the sweet spot for the VQ35DE. I've done a lot of cross country touring in my 05 G35 6mt stock and modified and have been able to pull off consistent 380+ miles trips on one tank. But there are a few factors that I've taken into account to reach those numbers ; driving conditions, driving habits, RPM range/speed, and air intake mods. When my car was stock I could achieve the advertised 29-30mpg highway. After I rebuilt my revup with JWT S7 cams, 11:1 forged pistons/rods, a modded Z-tube and full exhaust (which I later returned to stock exhaust) I was able get even better mileage by letting more air into/out of the engine faster, while burning fuel more efficiently with the higher compression. Last November I drove 426mi from my home in GA to visit family in NC, doing 80-90 mph @3000-3400rpms in 6th, averaging 32-34mpg and made it to my sister's house on one tank with the needle just touching E. I was amazed!!!

My dash pod says 19.4 MPG over the last ~10,000 miles. Average speed 35 mph. Probably half highway half city. Normally cruise 79 or 84 on the interstate depending on the circumstances.

At 32mpg you should be able to get 640 miles out of a full tank of fuel. Do you not fill up all the way or is your E higher up than mine? You should have had 6.7 gallons left which is just over 1/4 tank.

You know OP if your worried about gas mileage maybe you should have bought a prius.

To everyone else: Is it me or are there more stupid threads every month because of the Z dropping in price?

Yes that would be true if you could manage to get exactly 32 miles per gallon per tank. The mpg ratings are an average of however many gallons per mile consumed in a trip or tank. The actual miles per gallon varies as you drive, depending on engine load. The actual Mpg can fluctuate from 23mpg to 84mpg if you are coasting down a hill and the rpms drop or you are in coasting neutral, but when you climb a hill and the engine load increases again, the actual miles per gallon will drop back down because the engine has to work harder to get the car back up to speed again. So pretty much the average of the trip was between 32-34mpg given the fluctuations of load, if that makes sense

Your math doesn't add up. Say at the E mark you have 2 gallons left.

426/18=23.67 mpg

How do you figure you got 32-34?

I drove 420 miles, got 26.54MPG and used 15.83 gallons. That's just under 1/4 tank....

My best MPG on a fill up was 32.5. I've logged the last 29k miles of my driving and 93 fuel ups.

A mpg average is (generally) calculated by taking the miles traveled and dividing it by the number of gallons consumed.

426miles/33mpg = 12.9 gallons consumed. So anyway you chop this G.Mello fibbed about somethin because I know the Z tank is over 18 gallons. Could be that he only had ~15 gallons (2 gallons for reserve?) in the tank when he started the trip though.

When I drive at higher rpms, and go faster mph I can get to a gas station faster than someone who is nursing their car trying to squeeze the best mpg humanly possible out! If I need gas I pull over and buy it and don't sweat it or freak out if I'm only getting 18 mpg; enjoy the ride!

I was actually basing my numbers using the torque app linked to the ECU thru the OBDII port which did the calculations. It reads accurately on a lot of the real-time parameters like engine temp, rpms, air intake temp etc, but it may not be as accurate with fuel consumption. If you don't set all the parameters correctly such as vehicle weight etc, it won't read as accurately which is why the numbers are off.

I don't mean to mess the thread up, I've never run out of gas in the 350 before; spaced out and did once in my '77 280. One hard lesson about running out in any vehicle is that you then know how it relates to your gauge; I could go about 75 miles when on "E" (gauge went way below E) in the 280, some cars are completely empty soon as gauge hits "E". Anybody know about this with the Z33? I don't let it get that close, but it's good to know especially when on open road.

I don't know any exact numbers but I've played the game a few times. Was 35 miles out from my destination and the Z claimed "---" on the pod. Made it.

Also, I rolled with "---" on the pod for 3 days in my college town. Mileage was probably not much but I did atleast drive some where each day.

Why I play the game?

We have a 20 gallon tank, and we have pretty much a full 20 gallons to play with.

Must be nice to have your kind of bank roll. Daily driving I play around and enjoy the car. But on trips I will set the cruise at 65 and enjoy the ride while getting better MPG. If you don't wait till the last second and you plan your trip you can get MPG and still get there when you need to. Plus you don't get speeding tickets.

Then you should have said estimated MPG. I base my info off Miles/Gallons not a computers best guess.

I've logged 93 fuel ups over the last 29k miles. The best I have ever gotten was 32.5MPG.

So if you had actually gotten 32-34MPG you wouldn't have been close to E unless your gauge is wrong or you dont fill up all the way.

I wish I could tell you about gauge relation but mine has been broken since I bought the car in 08. I go by mileage and it bit me in the *** once.

I had one tank I idled more/played more than usual on and I forgot to stop at the gas station on the way home from work. I drove home, parked in the driveway (uphill) and then remembered I should have stopped. Oh well I'll go on the way to work....

Go outside the next morning and she wont start. Rolled down the driveway and turn at an angle to push the fuel over to the passenger side, the car starts for a couple seconds and dies.

Put about .5-.75 gallons of my race fuel (110 octane for the quad) in the tank and drive to the gas station about 1/4 mile from my house. and it took 19.34 gallons to fill it up. So we get to use the entire 20 gallons.

Thanks 92K1500 for the info. Sorry about my earlier post, I really didn't mean you personally trying to squeeze mpg out of your car, but reading my post it sounds negative; I was kind of trying to make it sound light hearted about getting to a gas station by driving faster, etc.
