Xenons not as Blue as I would like!
Having 2 cars with factory HID (my Lexus GS400) I have come to realize that the Z's color warms up to a very light purple/violet color and I do mean LIGHT! I've been driving the Z lately, but last night I drove my GS and noticed a "considerable" color difference on the road. And after going back and comparing the 2, my Lexus bulbs are definitely "bluer". Now for those of you who don't know, most factory HID bulbs are 4200k in color and that scale can go up to 8000! BUT!!! When the color scale goes up, the "brightness" goes down, SIGNIFICANTLY! This has been greatly debated over on the Lexus board where I also moderate. I will however seek replacement bulbs, because hey, I like more color. Probably a 6000k. I'll keep you all posted............
But this picture Nissan snapped is when the bulbs are first ignited! They, warm up to a much different color than pictured below!

TXSTYLE... i've noticed the same difference between my GS400 and Z as well. I believe they are D2S bulbs inside the Z, it says on the headlamp lens. Once you find out where to get them for a good price keep me informed. I want to change mine out as well, i'm assuming its as simple as that.. Changing out the bulbs.

Does anyone know the bulb number / type for the 350Z HID's?
Anyone know where to buy replacements (other than Nissan)?
Thanks.

THEY ARE NOT AS "WHITE, BRIGHT or TIGHT AS I WOULD LIKE!"

I just got my HID 4100K kit for my high beams today
PLease....don't buy them form Hids4less.com . They have serious issues with employee's misleading there customers.
This weekend i should have them installed
Tx, If your looking for a more "whitish" color, don't go 6000K or 8000K. Those are basically blue and purple. Upgrade the Bulbs to Philips Uliton Bulbs

That is bizzare. D2R are usually found in "reflector" type setups such as my GS! The bulb has a little metal strip on it that keeps the light from coming out of the bulb in every direction. The D2S typically found in "projector" setups (350Z, S2000, 5-Seiries). I wonder why...............?By the way dvlad, that Phillips link is bad.
Sorry, I also failed to mention there is a little "notch" on the D2S that is not present on the D2S which will not fit in the D2R socket UNLESS you modify it (which I'll probably do
). Look carefully at the picture below.

the blue tinge that you are seeing is probably is due more to the lens than the bulb. the light from most d2 bulbs are generally the same, with some differences between manufacturers. in general, most xenon projector lights use hella designed projector lenses (audi/bmw/etc.) and they tend to have a purplish tinge near the sides. the projector lenses on the 350z are much smaller than the other makes, and i think this results in the blueish tinge - more distortion.
i'm really surprised that the bulbs are d2r instead of d2s. d2r are exclusively used on reflector setups like lexus is300, older acura's, etc. can someone reconfirm this? not that i doubt you, it just might be only on some cars and not all.
the projector lens on the 350z is quite unique because of it's size. i'm not sure who the orig designer was: it might be hella and loosely based on the hella micro de lights.

Actually, I just got off the horn with a very knowledeable friend of mine who has owned Porsche, BMW and a new Escalade and retro-fitted all of em' with 6000k HID!
When someone here posted that "D2R" was stamped on the lense, I had to go look for myself. And yes it says that!
I am now proceeding to go and open them up for myself to mke sure, since I am about to order new bulbs.
I'll post up what I found.........
TXSTYLE, could you post how you got the headlamp assembly apart (maybe with pics if possible). I'm having some trouble after removing the headlamp from the body. Also, I believe the headlamps are not TRUE projector headlamps, and the headlight is a combination reflector/ projector assembly. This is noticed if you turn on the headlight, you'll notice light is reflected out around the projector "glass orb thingy" and that some light is reflected and some is put out through the actual projector. Thus the D2R bulb. I think the bulbs should be about 250 dollars a pair, but once you find out, please tell us where you get them, i'm going to order myself a pair as well...
Well it's a official! An OFFICIAL pain in the a** to try and remove the headlight assembly that is!
I mean damn, I have worked on a ton of cars in my time, but none where the friggin lights are sealed and bolted up like fort knox! I'll be heading up to a local dealer for insight and direction on this. Until then, my aftermarket lights will have to wait...........
