Default Thinking about trading in Revup for 370z nismo

I found a decent deal on a 2014 370z Nismo. $28 out the door, 32k miles, 10/10 condition.

I was thinking about trading in my 2005 track edition--I'm sick of putting a quart of 0w40 in every 300 miles--but they will only give me $6k for it. I put $6k into in mods, yet, I wouldn't doubt less than 150hp to the wheels, even with the uprev tune.
  • Momentum cat delete
  • Nismo S-Tune
  • Oil pan spacer
  • Mizu Radiator
  • Z1 hoses
  • Z1 mounts
  • JWT clutch/flywheel
  • MREV2/Spacer (removed for now)
  • Prothane Bushings
  • Uprev Tuned

It's hard to justify the significant loss I would take, and the extra $22k loan, considering I've only owned this car for about 2 years. On the flip side, I feel paranoid to drive my car any long distances, or even beat on it--in fear of some form of engine malfunction. Straight line speed isn't much of a factor, as I have a Z32TT. I'm looking for a more long-term investment/fun factor, overall high quality decision.

let's just say end result it will cost me $41k including my losses on my current vehicle. My question is, would the Nismo be justifiable in this situation, or should I rebuild the Revup and roll the dice?

Not that much of an upgrade to justify, is what you're implying?

No. I don't like how they drive! The pedals are so mushy and the electric steering is like a Prius

You could save like 8k by just getting a Sport edition instead of a Nismo and just spend the 8k later in mods if you still felt like it. You could probably get more gains by using that 8k in mods then upgrading to the nismo.

Nismos are not holding there value at all. Buy a sport 09 with low miles for 17-19k or buy a 2012+ for the shitty oil cooler, and just buy the trim parts for the nismo. Chances are you are going to get another exhaust and tune this too, there all that power you would have gained with the nismo.

I drove 370s before getting my 08 HR.

Not only was the blindspot horrible on the 370 the drive just wasn't as "fun" so to speak.

if the numbers YOU posted are not enough to deter you, then I don't know what will.

On a side note, why did you remove the MREV/spacer?

Yeah I agree $41k is just too much. I think msrp for a 2015 is around $42k.

I think the point is he is already backwards on the car. So here is my advice keep your car dont buy things you dont need for it, and dont buy your next car untill tou have the cash to pay for it. Otherwise in 2 years when you want a 335xi because its so sweet you will be paying 70k for a used one.

Its crazy making payments on a car over 10 years old

I may have misread but im guessing you still owe on your 05 if you want a long term investment get a house. They usually gain value, cars have the opposite effect.

If you're still happy with your 05' and there are no issues, keep it. Car payments suck.

I'm thinking about replacing my '03 Z with a 2006-2008 BMW M6, when it comes time to replace it. You can get a 500HP car that originally retailed for north of $100k for around $25k now. V10 with dual-clutch transmission. I'll be test driving one someday in the future. Just gotta budget around $3k for the DCT when the clutches go out.

There are issues- ticking and extreme oil consumption (revup). Has a very good uprev tune, but makes no power.

Removed for diagnostic purposes.

The PO of the nismo actually traded the car in for a 335xi. Funny.

Excellent points gentlemen. I love the look of the 14 nismo, but logically it wouldn't make sense. However, I'm seeing 2014 base models priced higher than this nismo--in fact, nearly all 2014's in my area are higher priced, even some 2012 base models.

My short answer: NO.

But why......

Up until August '15, I owned a '12 Z34N (still in the family, living with daughter who absolutely LOVES her new car).

While we owned it, the car was/is an absolutely dream. More power, very refined manners and while most Z33 owners here seem to diss on it, I loved the car. In so many ways it was/is a better car overall BUT....

About THE CAR itself -

The Z33 platform IS more raw and admittedly - but for the power/TQ advantage the Z34N has over either Z33 - it's IMO, a bit more of a driver's car.

I look at the Z34N as an evolutionary car more than anything else - similar to the way I look at my '08 Niz vis a vis my '03. It's more refined and it's softer than it's predecessors - again, in the same way the '08 is to the '03.

From a driver's standpoint, it is as much point n' shoot as my '08 Niz, no doubt. Engine, being the uprated VQ37VHR with more displacement and output overall makes it an absolute needs-nothing more engine (I know I'll take flack for that so I'll qualify that with "for MY needs".) Brakes are FAR superior than anything on the Z33 - yes, my opinion that the Ake's are "tactilely" better than my Brembos - and the car requires little in the way of mods to make it do the things I use it for better.

From this perspective, money notwithstanding, it's a GREAT UPGRADE, IMO. However...

About the Financial Side -

But mostly, I say no due to the finances. It's a depreciating asset and after paying out $41k for it, you'll have a car worth MAYBE low $30s....

But it all depends on your financial situation and condition. We leased ours initially then bought it out at lease end for cash, net result being a total payout just under the original Mulroney sticker. I attribute this to good timing and good negotiating; so for us, it made a lot of sense.

The money I "saved" on incurred modest lease payments (and the ability to write it off as a business expense) went into appreciating assets.... namely, real property.

About the reliability -

As with nearly any Nissan (or Honda or Toyota FTM...), the Z34N *might* have your modified Z33 by the ankles. It's newer, has fewer miles and frankly, there's not much that's going to go wrong with a stock Z34N that's maintained. (We had a service contract negotiated into the price/lease structure which continues today) so we paid virtually NOTHING to maintain the car.

But honestly, how much could go wrong in 11k miles? Laff...

From THAT perspective alone, I'd say go for it BUT..... there's so many other newish cars out there that would out-justify it on reliability.

So, long and short, I'd say no, it doesn't make a lot of sense despite it being a really great car.

My devalued $.02....

Mic

PS If one could buy a 14k mile Z34N for around $30k cash, I'd say go for it. But that not being the case, well...
