A little info about Cobras....

'93 -rated at 235 I think. My '86 GT has a '93 Cobra motor, and its totally stock, not even a K&N airfilter. On street tires it went 13.8 @ 102 MPH. My '86 GT is a bit lighter then a stock '93 Cobra though so I'd expect the average '93 Cobra to be a tick slower.

'94-'95 Cobras - same 5.0 HO as before, a tad slower as the newer body style brought more weight. Expect average ETs in the 14.3-14.4 range or so. Yes some will be faster, but we are talking average. Like any 5.0 Mustang, mods are cheap and easy so quick ones are all over.

'96-'98 Cobras- rated at 305hp, 4.6l V8. Typically expect very low 14s @ 100 MPH. Yes some have gone faster stock, but 14.0 @ 100 MPH is a pretty fair average. With just gears and drag radials they are good for mid 13s @ 102 MPH or so. The 4.6 DOHC loves gears

'99 & '01 Cobras- independent rear, rated at 320 horspower. Expect the '01s to be a bit stronger, average stock times around 13.7 @ 103 MPH. A couple mags did get 13.4s out of '01 Cobras but thats a hair quicker then average.

'03 Cobras- BADASS. Supercharged DOHC, 390 horses and under rated....expect a decent driver to run 12.7s @ 111 MPH or so. With a slightly smaller supercharger pulley which spins it faster and very basic mods, those cars are NASTY. A friend has one and he made ~470 rear wheel horsepower with bolt-ons which would equate to about 530 horsepower. The only real downside is the cars are heavy, 3700 lbs. Even so, they move out well. A guy who lives near me just went 11.5 @ 119 MPH at Atco on Sunday with a pulley and a couple of bolt-ons. They are sick cars....

My last car was a '97 Cobra with just a few mods (i.e. long-tube header, h-pipe, exhaust, pulleys, intake & 4.10 gearing & it was WAYYY faster than the Z. I love my Z, but until I do some more mods (which are much more expensive than Cobra parts), it's not gonna feel even close to the Cobra. On the other hand, even though I had a 'Kenny Brown' suspension kit on it, the Z would outrun it on any corner on any given day...much more well rounded than just eating someone at a stoplight.

Hey those "few mods" make a hell of a differance on a car like the Cobra.

this is going in sort of a tangent, but i'm starting to feel that handling is way overrated (or at least the differences in handling between the sub-40k performance cars). if your car is mostly used for driving on the street, i think braking and acceleration are the things that make the biggest performance difference (subjectively). now that i've had my wrx for awhile and after previously driving 240sx, both of which i've driven hard on the street, i'm realizing i pretty much never push the handling limits of a car when i drive on a street (which means i never do). i mean when are you racing (or trying to pass) somebody *around* a corner? 99% of the hard driving on the street is going straight, at least in my experience. so i think some minimum level of handling performance is important, but after that i think it gets a little overrated. imo.

(sorry for going off topic but i just see this come up a lot when cars like mustangs or camaros are compared with the z and i finally had to respond)

That is true.. but the Z's limits arn't that crazy tho.. Generally its a haaaaaiiiiir unsafe to be testin the lateral limits of a Z06 lol, but the Z's limits don't have that much speed. Granted my Z isn't slow nor incapable of handling with the best of em', but a Z06 or most other higher-end sports cars are alittle more intense.. lol. Ontop of that, handling matters in the aspect of overall manueverability. Deer jumps out in front of you @ 65.. your Celica is in the woods.. your civic is in the deer.. and your Z is in the oppisite direction going home with a story lol. Superior handling is a very good thing to have, sort of like a roll cage.. 'What are the odds of me rolling over..' then when it does, your sure as hell glad you had the roll cage lol

Note: Pardon the semi-rant, I have been out with my buddy's and felt the need to over-analyze the previous post. LoL

STOCK FOR STOCK.....its a good race. JUST like 99+gt.
A well maintained stock cobra will trap 102 pretty easily. The only problem with them is that the power comes on hard at about 4k rpms, every time i have ever driven one it would just spin hard. Very good top ends in the cars. A little exhaust work and gears and they are low 13 sec cars at 105+ on street tires. Put stickies on them 12's no problem. But very similar power to weight as the 350z.

yeah handling is definitely important for safety. but in terms of how much you will take advantage of the z's (or any "well-rounded" car's handling) compared to how much you'll take advantage of its acceleration, in a street performance context, the ratio is small and, i feel, exaggerated.

to put it another way, i (a non-autox'er) would rather have a little more power and a little less handling than the other way around.

I had a 2000 Mustang GT last summer and I finally met my grudge match at the track......a 95 Viper. I blew my engine on the launch, and still ran a 12.8 at 109......I had to have my Mustang flatbeaded home, I like having a car I can race and doesn't blow up all the time (my Z). Of course I was running 10 lbs of boost Anyways, 99% of everyone I knew had at a minimum of bolt ons on their car, just about any Mustang you will run into will not be stock. As a Z owner that knows Mustangs very well, you probably won't win....unless he is the typical driver that just spins all over the place off the line.....that will be your best chance is to outdrive him.

By the way, once I rebuilt my engine and so the Viper and I had at it again (he has K&N's, smooth tubes, ported throttle bodies and a 150 shot of NOS) and I still took him by about 2 cars. Now that I have my Z, he beats me starting out in 3rd with no NOS
