But it's one heck of a hedge on inflation! If I'd spent my paper route money on ten of these cars when new and put 'em away in a safety deposit box (a big one), I'd be making about a million bucks today, some $850,000 in clear "profit".
I'm a little old to start trying this now but here's a question for y'all to ponder..... what NISSAN could you buy today that would appreciate by this amount in 50 years? I would guess pretty much a Nismo Z with 21k miles (and in original condition) in the year 2070 might be worth something (as would a Nismo R35) but likely NOT 31x your investment. The Z would have to sell for $1.4M in 2070. Hahahahaha.
not to step on the point, and I know it's not a parallel comparison, and the car would be more fun, but simply for comparison if we're talking 'investments'
stock market has averaged 12% since inceptions, factor in a 4% inflation, $3800 invested in 1971 would be worth $954k in 2020...
So you invest $3800 in 1971 (in something):
would you rather have 21k pleasurable miles driven on a sweet 240z
or
would you want $144k (price difference between $810k selling price and $954k investment return) in the bank?

Oh pish posh, James. That's far too practical. This is just more fun.
Besides, it sold for $310,000. Do the math please. My head is spinning.
Barely look at listings there any longer. There are no “deals” to be had any longer for me. If you’re a collector, great. But so many Z cars go for way more than I think they’re worth. Or maybe I’m just bitter my last S30 didn’t hit reserve... hahaha.
That was my fault though..... bad timing just before Christmas.
Worth the money? IMO, no... But, these ARE becoming pretty scarce, especially ones in this untainted, adult owned condition; so I guess they've reached that mythical "what-a-buyer-will-pay" status.
I like Z32s. My NA model was a blast to drive with the tops off. They have a lot of "character". But not crazy about this color. (Part of the reason my Banana S30 didn't last in my garage for too long. Laff.....)
The Z33 is likely worth that price. Unless you're a Bi-Zenon/ Led snob. The headlights aren't available from Nissan anymore, I turned down $600 for mine wo ballasts. I paid $22.5k for my 06 with the same mileage in 2011. The demand just isn't there to keep prices up...
