350z convertible top opens on the highway
Hello,
I have a 2008 350z roadster, and one of my main issues is the top opening ever so slightly on the highway, by itself. This causes extreme wind noise in the cabin, and scares the living crap out of me. It starts opening at 60mph, and gets progressively worse when I reach 80, sometimes when it’s windy it even blows open. I reached out to a shop and they said I need a new top. I think they’re just looking for work. Common sense tells me that the locking mechanism is broken, and needs replacing. Or maybe it is the top? I’m not sure. I couldn’t find the answer to this question anywhere. So I hope you guys can help me out. I miss doing 60 rolls with my friends.
thank you,
AbF

Your solution will depend on how completely you want the top to function. The reason I say that is because as stated above if the top "blew open" like a parachute at 80 mph some tubes or joints may have been bent.
If you need the top to function fully-open/close properly inspect all the roof frame with a really good flashlight. Go through a few open/close cycles and check for smooth movement or points where it binds.
Regardless of whether you want it to function completely, you still need to take the inside cover off of the front/1st bow section. Inside you'll see how the handle connects to the latching pins. Here you have 2 requirements :
The pins must line up with the holes, and they must extend completely into the top of the A pillars. If they're bent, straighten them so they line up, then use the adjustments to make sure you get as much movement as possible from the latching handle.
Good luck and report back if you were able to get the latches working.
