Why do people dog down on any 350Z with the DE engine?

Would love to hear your opinion on this (and I know too) but why go lower compression with boost?

​​​​​​When I hear people brag that they got a JDM engine, I sorta giggle … because the car came from japan so in a round-about kind of way…they’re all JDM cars. And despite my car being pointed to american while others remained in japan, austrailia/nz, europe … they all have (essentially) the same parts. ​





Pony - elaborate - why is 11:1 bad for boost?
Higher compression on a boosted car will lead to increased cylinder pressure and broken parts, detonation, overheating, etc….you can have a built engine with forged internals and still overheat, and still detonate unless you’re running race fuel. High compression is how you make power without boost, but if you’re boosted, there’s just no need. Of course, it depends on how much boost you’re running as it’s directly related to cylinder pressure, the OP didn’t mention his goals, but for an 11:1 engine, I would say 6psi would be my safe limit, but again, he didn’t specify. Now, if you’re taking a full-fledged race engine making huge boost numbers, they’re running around 8:1 compression.

For any bolt on supercharger for the DE I'm going to bet 11:1 is ok and better in every way to low compression.

I love the 300zx, almost bought one while in college but looking back glad it didnt work out

love the 350z. I think the 370z and the VHR will go down as Nissans most potently upgradable engine (minus the tuning aspect - I think ECUtek is the only game in town?) I think between the larger displacement, the variable timing, variable lift, 7500rpm rev limit it’s the best.

I think the 350z will be the most friendly upgradable engine with similar but not as big of numbers as the VHR. Parts a plenty, more tuning options, easy to work on / fix rebuild / benefits of variable intake timing, no hassle of exhaust timing or variable lift (the mechanism of the variable lift looks nasty complicated).

God bless the GTR and the VR30 … but is a mod’d 3.0liter really going to make more hp and torque than either a mod’d 3.5 or 3.7 all things being equal?

The VR38 is nasty and has higher potential than the VR30 and VQ37, the 37 is held back by VVEL I think as most serious builds I see for that engine remove it.

100% … I wrote that wrong - meant to exclude the VR38. With that being said I think the safe bet is the VR38 will be the top gasoline engine that nissan ever produces. I think the R36 will be a hybrid system.

So did he just slap that *** or did he grab and hold on to it?

Good thread. I'm thinking about an engine build with a bolt on vortec to swap in when the DE finally gives out. I like the idea of a spare. I should have followed that approach with women... when one crashes and burns then you've got a backup.
