Default Radio wiring

I did a Google search and found several 2005 350Z radio wiring diagrams and accordingly they say the light green wire is for switched radio. Well when I hooked a new radio and amp up to that light green wire it did not work. I had to connect the radio and amp to the always hot yellow wire. My light green wire has 2 gray stripes repeated about an inch apart. I powered the radio off but my amp stayed on and drained the battery. Ugh ! Then it locked me out of the car because my driver door handle is not working. I bought new handles but haven't had time to put them in. So I had to break into the car, charge the battery, etc.

Help !!

Is this a Bose OEM head unit? Are you using a wiring harness?

There should be a remote wire coming from your aftermarket head unit which sends a 12v+ signal when the head unit powers on. That is the wire that you connect to your amplifier to trigger it to turn on.

There are basically two power wires from the Z that should connect to your head unit. One is a constant 12v+ wire from your head unit which is generally yellow and connects to the wire that is always hot. The red wire from your head unit should connect to the "switched" 12v+ wire from the Z.

Thanks for your reply. Years ago the radio died so I replaced it with a Pioneer head unit. I wasn't aware of after-market harnesses, so I cut all the wires and soldered that installation. Now the Pioneer head unit quit working and I decided to go with a single din receiver and extra storage space. Now that I am older and can't remember things I should have written down the connections. Yes, the new CD/radio has a red and yellow wire and unless I connect them both to the Z yellow wire it doesn't work. That leaves the radio constant on and it has to be manually turned off, and I had to connect my amp in that connection and that leaves the amp on. According to the diagrams online, I should be able to connect the red wire from the cd/radio and the power wire from the amp to a "light green" wire switched 12v line from the Z. I have a light green wire but it has gray stripes and it doesn't work.

I'm looking for the switched power wire from the Z.

Gotcha. Unfortunately, it sounds like you created a lot more work for you, but you should still be able to get it figured out. It sounds like you have a base and non-Bose.

You could find the 12v+ signal wire from the Z body harness if have a test light or multimeter.

Otherwise, the switched signal output wire goes to terminal/pin #10. This appears to be true with Bose models as well, so you just need to connect the switched wire to your head unit to trigger it to turn on.

The FSM indicates that the wire should be light green (LG). If you've cut the original harness connector and no way to determine which pinout/terminal is #10, then you'll need to trial/error it.

Thanks again. I should have thought of that, I have a digital voltmeter. So I tested the green wire and 3 other wires that are unaccounted for in my harness. 3 of them are striped and the same gauge as the green wire which I assume is not the proper gauge for a hot wire. So now I am really stumped, it appears I don't have a switched hot wire in that harness. I wonder if there is another switched wire under the dash that I can get to, like the starter power.

If you can't find the switched wire from the body harness, you can always use a fuse TAP adapter and run it off an empty fuse space or piggyback it off an existing fuse that is only energized when the car is in ACC/ON.

Something like the cigar lighter or power mirror in the picture below:
