Default stopwatch?????

I really hope that this question doesn't show too much of my ignorance with cars and in particular this car. I really have tried to research this by reading the manual and I do not believe that I am missing anything. But, then again I have done stranger things. So here it goes:

What in the world is the deal with the stopwatch feature on the computer display? Does anyone really use this? Is there a way of using this that I am not realizing? Just seems to me that if I am in the opportunity to do some dragging, I am not going to want to take my hand off the wheel in order to start and stop this thing. This is what leads me to think that I am missing something. Is there something inherent in the car that starts and stops it at certain milage intervals, or other controls that I am unaware of? I do plan on doing some mods and "test and tunes" here in the spring and would like to utilize the stopwatch if possible. Just that right now it really seems like a useless feature. Something that sounded and looked kinda cool when I bought it but was shortly proven to be impractical. That is of course unless I am completely missing something. Anybody have any takes on this?

It's pretty useless generally. But I do occasionally use it at the track (road course) to get a rough lap time. Just hit it when crossing start/finish and you get a lap time. It helps to find a spot where you have an easily identifiable marker (like the start/finish line) and where you are going straight and not shifting. It's easy to find such a place on a real track though.

yeah its useless.

would be cool if it could start and stop with certain speeds and distances, but it cant.

whats more. theres a "timer" that does the exact same thing but keeps a count of the ODO as well. dont think it gives time beyond seconds though. more useful for timing trips though.

I use the stopwatch to see how long it takes the RX-8 to pull up next to me after racing him off the line

actually, besides using the stopwatch, i grab a quick bite to eat, fill my gas, pee, and then the rx-8 would finally catch up.

i use the one with the odo all the time, see how long it takes me from my house to work/girlfriend's house/aunt's house/mom's work/etc. Since i can take many different routes, i see which one is the shortest/fastest.
I had been taking a road to my g/f house which i though it was shorter because i looked the diagonal way, as opposed to going in an L-shape. Finally realized that it was actually longer, and it took me longer to get there than the way i thought it was longer.
Only thing is, that the way i go now, i take the Turnpike, where i haul ***, so it actually costs me more now because of gas

Other than that, don't have much use for it.

the in-dash stopwatch is more of a gimmick than anything really useful...

at the track I strap a Robic SC-808 lap timer to the steering wheel.... it's easier to reach and I has a lot more useful information http://www.ompusa.com/robic.htm

Dissolved--- that cat picture is hilarious!
