The RB also has an iron block. The SR20 is all aluminum. The bolt pattern for both is completely different than the VQ on the bell housing. Therefore, the trannies need swapping as well. This is a shame as the stock transmission is stronger than either of the trannies behind those two motors. Yes, even the GT-R 6 speed. Besides, the six speed from the GT-R would be a waste without the AWD conversion, and the t-case and front end weight would only make distribution worse. The driveshaft is too long for either and would need replacement unless tranny mounting could be shifted forward. The SR20 revs higher than the damn cam on bucket design of the 3S-GTE, and is lighter to boot. Tuning is a snap, and I mean a snap. The options are endless because unlike the Z, the ecu is cracked and everyone and their grandma has fuel and timing maps for various configurations. And blocks are cheap. I have thought a lot about selling my VQ35 and swapping in a SR20 for a lot of reasons, but I really want to keep the tranny and enjoy the challenge of a new motor to work with. Building a SR20 has become as easy as ordering a pizza. Mine was NA in my Sentra, and my friend has a redtop in his 91 S13, mostly stock save intercooler and plumbing and oil pan. Motor and harness came from heavythrottle. ECU done by JWT. Great motor, sr20deforums.net has all the info you could want. With the RB, you've got bragging rights, but would not be near as cheap or easy to install.

But will you run into emissions problems when trying to smog check a 350Z with SR20DET? Isn't it illegal to swap in an older engine into a newer car?

Disagree with the r34 and r33 comment. The GTR's always have the RB26DETT. The GTS-T's have RB25DETs, and then the more economy oriented skylines have the RB20s. Its not a different motor for different displacements, but a different motor for different trim levels.

yeah even the R32 GTR's had the RB26DETT...what I didn't know was that the RB20s were 6 cylinder...I just found that out now cuz I always thougth that being a 2.0L engine that it would be a 4 cylinder like the SR20DET because there aren't many small displacement 6 cylinder engines made with around 2.0 liters. The only other 2.0L 6 cylinder engine I can think of is in the Japanese FTO with the 2.0 V6

That's Topics ride if it's got the SR20DET in it. A good reason for switching to that engine is it's lightweight characteristics. Sure a RB26DETT would make more power, but do you wanna be even heavier than before? After gutting his car and putting that engine in, it weighed 2600lbs. That's damn light for the power it puts out. Around turns, it definitely caught up to my ride easily (I'm twin turbo'ed too). My car felt so porky compared to that beast. Look for it in future drift events across the nation!
