Default Is There a Gas Strut for the Hood

My previous car was a Miata, and someone sold and 'engineered' a kit that installed a gas strut to replace the hood prop. The cost was ~$50, and it was sweet. Does anyone know of a similar kit for the 350?

I was thinking of the same thing, but I haven't heard of anything like that made for the Z.

I've read the reason we have the prop is because of the aluminum hood - pulling down to overcome the gas strut pressure could/would bend the hood - - - that makes sense,
so be proud of you light aluminum hood and the prop

Don't the Maxima's have the aluminum hood as well? They have the gas strut.

Yes they do. The G35 has them on the trunk and we have alumn as well. I would like one on the hood too. Maybe we can buy some and rig it to work somehow?

in the book about designing the z, they mention that they left off the gas strut so you could see how light the al. hood was when you dealt with it.

sounds like a story to BS around cost cutting.

Hmm... I'm pretty sure my 02 Maxima does NOT have an aluminum hood. I got a bit of rust where I had some chipped paint. It does have struts to hold up the hood.

I know the 02+ Altimas have a rod, no struts, but do have an aluminum hood.

BTW, the 04 Maximas went to struts for the trunk. I don't recall about the hood though.

Is your Maxima hood really light? If so, it's definitely aluminum. If not, maybe the new body style's are, and I'm sure they too have the struts. But then again, I could be wrong

It's pretty darned hard to tell how light/heavy it is w/o unbolting the struts. If it were aluminum, I doubt I'd see the rust and I think Nissan would've touted it as a feature (as they did on the 02+ Altimas). BTW, my 02 is a 5th gen Max. The 04+ Maxes are 6th gen and the whole car is based on the Altima design.

Default Got Hood Shocks...I do

You asked...I answered. PM me for details, I have designed a set of hood shocks for our Z's. A few of the members on this forum already have them installed.

00-03 Maximas do not have a alum hood. 04+ Do.

All 02+ Altimas have alum hood and trunks, but use rods.

You can always check by putting a magnet to your hood/trunk. Thats what I did with my old Z32.

Here's 350ztn's thread from 350zmotoring. It has some pics of the shocks installed.
