I don't think they were worried about space in the back. They were worried about rolling forward into the car in front of them. The guy couldnt get the car in a reverse motion without rolling forward first.

The only problem is that the author's claim that this took place over the period of an hour is bogus. Look at the shadows of the trees in the street and along the brick wall behind them. It hardly changes position. If they had been there an hour, you would see significant movement in the shadows. My guess is that it was 5 to 10 minutes max.

Parking break is already on
So you press the clutch and you press the gas pedal - ideal would be about 2000-2200 revs...
Easley start to release pressure from the clutch pedal while holding your foot on the gas pedal. At the moment where you feel that the car is putting pressure while going reverse - start to release the emergency break. IT IS IMPORTANT AT THIS MOMENT TO BALANC YOUR GAS PEDAL PRESURE. And you'll be free in no time.
More experience drivers are able to do this in a meter of seconds.

He means that with the parking break engaged, you can let off the brake in order to balance the clutch and gas pedals to find the friction point. Once you get engagement, you can start easing off the clutch as you apply more gas... the pull is the opportune time disengage the parking break.
