Default ordering a Z

i know that regular way is to go to dealership, find best price, etc. deal with the dealers and bring the car home. but couple questions on ordering when the dealer doesn't have a car in his inventory.

a) do you get the price, financing, etc. and all that stuff like options all dealt with and THEN order the car? or order the car and make a deposit and deal after the car arrives?

b) how long does it take for a car to come? days? weeks? months?

c) are there any additional fees on ordering? i know that all cars, even on the lot, have the destination and handling fee.... so if there isn't any fee, i think it's better ordering than getting one off the lot. i mean lot's way faster, but ordering is like brand spankin new from the factory and no one's test driven it or anything :P

that's it. thanks in adv.

A) not sure yet but I will know in the next day or two.(working on ordering mine as we speak)

B) From what I have read so far, nissan only takes orders from dealers once a month. Not sure what part of the month though... After the order is taken the common answer to how long is eight weeks, though I suspect that is the best case scenerio. I have read about some people waiting three months or more.

C) There isn't any sort of financial incentive to order the car, you have to pay the destination fee regardless. There shouldn't be any additional fees for ordering a car either. Typically dealers prefer to sell cars off the lot rather than order them though. Things such as dealer holdback help the dealer to make an additional profit from the vehicle. I don't believe the dealer gets any sort of holdback for cars they order.

a) When you order, the dealer fills out a 'Build to Order' sheet with the exact model, color, and options you want the factory to build. You should agree to a price on the car at this point. Dont pay MSRP. Once you settle on a price, you give the dealer a REFUNDABLE deposit - usually $1000. You should get an order number.

b) The dealer usually places their 'build allocation' at the beginning of the month. In my case, I ordered the 1st week of Dec '03, and my Z arrive the 1st week of March '04 - so 3 months.

c) The Destination Fee is standard - you can't avoid this. It's what Nissan charges to transport the vehicle. I think it's $560. You should not pay extra for the dealer to order the car for you. As for test drives, the car is usually taken for a test drive after it's built at the factory.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

a) It's a good idea to get all the negotations taken care of when you order. Get everything in writing. I paid $500 for the deposit when I ordered.

b) The dealer will usually first try to locate the car from nearby dealerships. Then if not found, an order will be placed and will probably be around 2-3 months for you to get it. I waited 3.5 months.

c) Destiniation should be the only fee other than tax, title and tag of course. Someone will usually test drive it before you get it to. Mine had 7 miles when I got it.

I knew what I wanted and was not in a hurry, contacted internet sales staff, had price set before going to dealer.
Went to dealer to sign sale contract, Put a $500 dollar deposit on my credit card(easier to get refunded if a problem arises).
Dealer then located a car and rerouted it to thier location, instead of a dealer trade, they grabbed it at the dock, so car was still in shipping wrappers. Big dealerships like autoway always have new cars coming in. It took about a month to get my car.
