to my knowledge it isnt illegal, but it can cause serious injuries in an accident.

Triso07,

I just think many of these people don't know how NYC cops are. My father is a detective and a few of my uncles are retired NYPD, so I am very pro police. Many NYC cops are power freaks and like to bust chops. They don't get paid very well, so perhaps he was a bit jealous of your car. My take on the situation is that he was breaking ***** and wanted you to know that he had the power to give you a ticket. He probably thought your smile was a wise a$$ smile, almost mocking the cops. In the end, he didn't give you the ticket, which he could have (it's against the law). Be thankful he didn't give you the ticket, as he was just interested in showing his power.

By the way, I too wear my belt like that sometimes, as it feels uncomfortable to wear it across my shoulder.

Default points:

1) Wearing the belt under your arm will get you a ticket in Texas and probably elsewhere

2) Driving a Z in ANY state will get you noticed...unfortunatley some people do not react well to the fact that you have a kick @$$ car and they do not

3) Based on the story, it sounds like the officers were simply performing their duty to "serve and protect" by using their powers of intimidation ;-) .....colored by a little envy no doubt (see point 2)

Since buying my Z i've had numerous run-ins with "well meaning members of the local constabulary." In all cases they were simply protecting me and others by ensuring that i was taken down a peg or two for owning a hot car. And i agree with fblue on this....it takes a certain kind of person to want to be a cop. Some, but certainly not most, of these individuals NEED the power trip.

I've just learned to accept that to Johnny-Law, i am a target....its just an option that Nissan didn't list on the window sticker

Thank you Dave679, Fblue, and bitst0rm for finally answering my questions with good sensible information. Your posts are very appreciated. Man, I mean some people were saying some pretty stupid things to me, all because I wore my seatbelt under my arm. I did not realize the severity of wearing it that way, and will wear it correctly from now on. Thanks for the very useful information, and non-confrontational posts.

What put people off were the name calling and such towards the cops.

I don't know, i just read this whole thread again, and i don't think i was putting the cops down. I told a story and then asked a question based on something that happened in the story. Maybe people should read through all of this again.

Triso, I missed the part about the cop walking across traffic to get to you. I just assumed he was standing near you when this happened. You may have a point.

Dave, You missed one important thing regarding seatbelt laws. While people have the right to endanger themselves, they don't have the right to ask me to pay for their mistakes.

Medical costs from accidents directly impact my insurance rates. People that are injured in an accident and don't have insurance usually foist the hospital costs on the state, driving up taxes (or at least diverting funds from other services).

Either way, the general population incures the costs of accident injuries, so its in the best interest of the state for people to buckle up, which is why we have laws.

Yes, the whole reason I made this thread was to

1 - share a story that happened to me last weekend
2 - ask a question that derived from the story I told -- if it is legal or illegal to where a seatbelt the way I did
3 - elicit a response on whether or not wearing my seatbelt under my arm could be harmful or not.

I never intended to get into little confrontational battles with people on the forum, who kind of jumped to conclusions about things. I apologize if I came off that way. It was never my intent. If some of you re-read my posts there was never anything said with negative intentions. Thanks for all your replies.
