Default Tuning in Japan -- working overtime

The Japan magazine... Option... just came out with a very detailed article on the new FairladyZ...

Summary... The US and Japan specs are different. The engine has great low-to-middle torque -- but getting beyond 250 km/hour == or 155 mph== is difficult.

Tomei.. the engine tuning shop specialists.. have torn apart the engine in order to investigate whether a turbo is possible. Overall summary is ... this engine is hard to customize. Might look into developing high compression pistons.

Mufflers... ECU... all being looked at... but difficult..

Am posting some pix.. The article is hard to translate.. maybe Takao can give me some help.

I like those Porsche-like headlights in the third posted pic and the wing on the second Z down on the last pic. It is great having a forum member who is living in Japan to get these out quickly- great job fairlady Z!

I don't have time to translate the entire thing. So here are some interesting parts from the first page.

Exhaust tuning:
(Dyno Tests)

A: Stock (258.2 PS)
B: R1 Class Titanium Exhaust (270.6 PS - 15 PS gains)
C: B + Straight Pipes (Under 3000 rpm it made slightly less power than A or B. However from 3000+ rpm the power curve rose sharply to 282.4 PS - 24.2 PS gains)

The torque curve shows similar results.
They suspect that exhaust pulses have something to contribute to the loss of power below 3000 rpm. This can be corrected by adjusting the CVTC valve timing.

They were pretty suprised at the amount of power that can be gained just from tuning the exhaust. They go on to say that the exhaust manifold for the Z33 is extremely short. The length of the Z33 manifold plus the straight pipe is probably the same length as the GTR exhaust manifold. Therefore manipulating the straight pipe probably had a duel benefit by giving a similar effect as tuning the manifold as well.

That's it for now!

Thumbs up

Fairlady, you totally rock, man! Many thanks for posting this! Sign me up for those downpipes and exhaust. I'd pay $1,200-$1,500 for that kind of gain.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Fairlady,
Thanks for the info!!!

ZMNZ...thanks for the translation...my eyes started bugging when I saw those curves...i was thinking, please tell me those gaps between the lines on the dyno runs were just because of the exhaust tuning!

I really like the reckless nose piece, and those massive rear flares on the first pic look pretty sweet also.

Notice the little air scoop for the CAI on the INGS kit. Great idea might even get a little ram air action happening.

The news about the exhaust is very promising. I thought the car would have potential there since its so quiet. I wonder if long headers would help much (if there is room). Can anyone tell if the exhaust mods included removing the cats or are those gains with cats in place?

Sounds like tuning this motor is going to be a real challange, so
don't expect inexpensive parts any time soon.

I really like that Ti exhaust in the photo. Good to see the exhaust mods showed improvements. I am not really a fan of any of the body kits. Except maybe the one on the cover, which is just over the top.
