In Mississippi it's a percentage of the value of the car, so it goes down each year as your car devaules.. It's also highly dependant on where you live... city or county, and which city.

I am from Michigan originally, and there its based on the weight of the car more than the value of the car. I think that's a better way to do it, because the money goes to the roads, and weight is what kills the roads.

I pay $65 for 2 years here in New York.. That includes a surcharge for a vanity plate.. Never thought New York would be one of the cheapest states to register a car.. I hope those jerks in Albany don't realize this..

Yes - but in some states they have a personal property tax on household. And - Arizona;s real eastate taxes are much lower than some of the states. If they dont get you one way - they get you another I guess.

Lets see..

$39.90 for registration
$20.00 for 'safety inspection'
(no emmisions last year.. only bi-yearly)
$228 6 months tax
$203 6 months tax

$490 just last year.. and that's EVERY year! Luckily they are depreciating my car like crazy.. so my tax bill is going down fast.

I don't know how people afford luxury cars here.. the taxes alone would kill you.

Filled up for $2.04/gal this morning too

I'm paying $512/month for 3 years. And that was with $0 down, no trade-in.

Please use K-Y if we are giong to continue to be screwed on registration. I paid over $500 when I registered mine and that was with my $87 discount for serving my country. And this morning before I drove to california I paid 2.41 per gallon of gasoline.
To answer the question about what good are the casinio's. They are not here to really benifit the residents of NV, just the peopke that visit and play. The residents are the hired help.

Where was the Station for 100 Octane? Local I hope..

GQ_ is looking at fuel options - with his Greddy TT - In So Cal link.

Looks like Performance 103 - is available at $5.25 ibn 54 Gallon Drum. Should not have MTBE and is good for California..

Search Web for Performance 103 - and it should give you a good link.

Cheers Amy -

Perhaps the 100 octane is for helicopters - do they have a pad near the pump??

Wow, registration must be more in SoCal than in NorCal or something... I paid $238 which included the $25 fee for personalized plates. But Jason, at least you're making buku bucks at Performance though, right?

Still haven't answered.. is this big lump sum in Cali part of taxes on the car? Or just DMV fees.

For instance, here, you can't get your county stickers until you pay your property tax (and they still charge you $24 for the stupid sticker).. but its taxes and fees to the county.

DMV just collects simply registration and plate fees.

Its effectivly a property tax.. just not called that. From the Cali DMV Webpage:

Vehicle License Fee

Most vehicles are also assessed a Vehicle License Fee (VLF). The VLF was established by the Legislature in 1935 in lieu of a property tax on vehicles. The formula for VLF assessment established by the Legislature is based upon the purchase price of the vehicle or the value of the vehicle when acquired. The VLF decreases with each renewal for the first 11 years.

The DMV returns almost all vehicle license fee revenue to the cities and counties. For more details on how your VLF money is used, contact your local city or county government officials.
Thats also why you can deduct the VLF from your income taxes.

Just in Cali the DMV collects it. For instance in VA, the Counties collect it. And the rates vary by county too I think.

Our lovly government decided to repeal the car tax (got people elected) and then later decided to freeze the rollback of the tax! So now we are stuck at some partial rebate of it. Otherwise, its 4.5% of the determined value.

I don't know how people afford to have big BMWs, etc here with crap like that.
